Show Damning the Dead King. The Protestant papers, says the Sacred Sa-cred Heart Review, have been damning the late King of Belgium enthusiastically enthusiasti-cally and emphatically. Some, which are very shy of saying a word about hell, have been decidedly orthodox on this point with regard to King Leopold. Such a thing as a possible repentance i on the part of the poor old sinner our separated brethren seem to have excluded ex-cluded entirely, and they are very much annoyed indeed that the Catholic church should have held out any hope to him. This is one of the many cases in which the church differs from the sects. The Catholic church, like the good Shepherd, seeks the lost sheep in the wilderness: she goes down to the very ates of hell to save the imperilled imper-illed soul. In doing this she is misunderstood mis-understood by the sects. They imagine, imag-ine, if a priest of the Catholic church gives the Jast Sacraments to a dying sinner, that the church thereby condones con-dones the sins of the departed and in some measure defends the misdemeanors misdemean-ors and irregularities of his former life. Of course. Catholics know that this is absurd. Almighty God loves the sinner sin-ner although He hates the sin. The Catholic church, founded and commissioned commis-sioned by Him. and inspired by His Spirit, does in like manner. |
