Show PETER COOPER, the wealthy New York philanthropist, does not confine his acts of charity to a kind that will bring him the praise of the public. He is generous towards street beggars, and is usually besieged with a crowd of them when he enters his store. He usually provides himself with a handful of change, which he distributes among them. Many of the beneficiaries of his bounty are hard cases, some of them confirmed criminals, but his charity does not falter on that account. It is a pity there are not more men in the world like Peter Cooper. |
