A noble life is a voice; it speaks when the tongue is silent, and is neither a constant attraction nor a perpetual reproof. Love is said to resemble the butter on bread. Without butter the bread is dry and hard to swallow. So it is with life and love. The body is a casket not precious in itself but valuable in proportion to what fortune, or industry, or virtue has placed within it. This old German proverb is worth practicing: "Honor the old, instruct the young, consult the wise, and bear with the foolish." |
