Show ann ti ailini i i i r w THEN HUNO HIMSELF A HORRIBLE DOUBLE TRAGEDY AT CHICAGO the murderer of miss i ercha lynched by a mob CHICAGO july 31 A horrible double tragedy was brought to light shortly after midnight this morning by tho police when the dead bodies of henry hosch a retired saloon keeper and his wife were found in their apartments south sangamon street both were well past middle age and were looked upon by their neighbors as a happy couple oven ing sitting on the stoop sunday morning a newsboy left a paper and the milkman the days supply of milk lying neglected at the back door of the fiat these objects first attracted attention of the neighbors late basl night one of the neighbors notified the police and two officers were sent to investigate they broke open the front bedroom door and a sickening sight met their view in an alcove of the bedroom lying in a pool of blood lay the dead body of mrs hosch clad in her night dress proceeding to the next room the officers perceived a rope tied over the top of the door frame A vigorous push was given the door it burst open and the officer was nearly knocked off his feet by a body which was hanging suspended the feet almost touching the floor nearby a sheet of newspaper new paper daubed with blood and a butchers knife suggested the story of the tragedy he had tied the rope shut the door and proceeded to his self mur der no reason can bo assigned for alio tragedy everything about the room bespoke of comfort and there was no indication of any struggle prior to the fearful crime A subsequent examination of the bodies shows that sirs hosch was not stabbed as supposed but the fact is plain that she was choked until death ensued the knife simply had been used by hosch to cut the rope into a suitable length so he could hang himself the theory of the police is that hosch in a fit of insanity choked his wife to death and then strangled himself tl ann lynched CHICAGO july 31 A special to the times from omaha says premont emmons the young man who delab artely stabbed bertha at pawnee city a few days ago because she had refused his proposal of marriage was taken from the authorities at 2 this morning and lynched by a mob the ol 01 alie monitor NEW YOKE july 31 this is the eighty fifth anniversary of the birth of captain john ericsson the inventor of the monitor the terrible engine of war that created such havoc with the rebal navy nearly a quarter of a century ago and he is still living in his old fashioned house at 36 beach street in this city he has a fair prospect of adding now laurels to his preparing a supply of dried meat preparatory it is presumed to an outbreak of hostilities when a party went to arrest the hos they killed three indian scouts the posse returned fire wounding several of the band which immediately loft the reservation followed by othora all golbig for the mountains july 31 the war department is in receipt of the fol bowing telegram from the commandant at san barlos arizona forwarded by general under dato of july Capt ainLee tinder the discretionary orders I 1 had given him prior to the receipt of your telegram of this date has just returned to this post he reports that the serious trouble resulted from a quarrel among the indians themselves captain lee remained upon the ground until 4 p m today to day when he concluded that the indians were not disposed to leave and that his further presence tended to excite them captain lee then returned to this post from the indians captain leo learned that those ordered to be arrested were seen near their camp today to day and he is of the opinion and I 1 concur that these indians can be arrested quietly in a fow days tho cattle herd was upon its grazing ground yesterday full written report by mondays mail post commanders have been notified to use every effort to promptly intercept tho raiding parties |
