the following account of a w wonderful ond erful escape of one of the brethren of this district from a horrible fate worth of record I 1 concluded to send a narration of the circumstance for insertion in our paper A young man by the name of don C fullmer residing in second district of ward went horseback one day last eek to hunt for an absconded cow in maple cannon and having gone a considerable distance up the mountain felt u peculiar sense of impending danger creep oer him although all around deemed ery quiet and sot a thing appeared of which he need be afraid he saw hunsel fm a kind of a tree toi ery much perplexed and fearful oer something he knew not aliat after awhile this feeling wore off and was temporally forgotten shortly lie espied a bear cub up a tree near by and recollecting that a reward ofine dollars might be counted upon for a bears scalp he decided to try to get the youngster he threw rocks at it to induce it to coine down but it did not come he then mounted the tree and biad got about twenty feet high when to his unspeakable dismay the old she bear came to the foot of the tree wild with rage at seeing our hero between herself and lier baby bear she raved around m grat fury tearing a tree near by up by the roots and exhibiting other c of rage which w ire truly appalling finally she started to ascend the the tree and acot within a few feet of him and to use his awu expression there iwas not between two ures but between two bears without any weapon to defend myself with he homeer ho weer shouted to the mother telling her to go away saying 1 I dont want anything to do w alth you or your bear either she seemed to understand aim and in obedience went down the tree and off a distance but three times she came back each time he shouted to her as aboe he descending all the while the bear being afi a little way he reached the ran to his horse quickly mounted and went right giad of his narrow escape and feeling very thankful to god for his remarkable preservation and more scared as he went off than while the scene was heing enacted he is an exemplary young man a teacher in our sunday school and lug veracity unquestionable last sabbath being called up aponto onto address the scholars he related the above terrible incident and was listened to with the keenest attention the bear was of the variety known as the brown bear and very large considering bial ferocity of chese animals in defense of their young the fact of his complete escape seems very remarkable july in honor of sirs day on the of july a social gathering was held in the largest hall to be much too small to accommodate conveniently tho many friends who came to pay their respects to the esteemed lady although the hall was greatly crowded not a word of dissatisfaction was bieard every one accommodated commo dated himself or herself to the occasion ice cool lemonade was handed around plentifully the evenings entertainment consisted in dancing songs and recitations during the evening a handsome dressing case was presented to mrs day accompanied compa nied by a neat little speech from one of the committee of ladies who had selected and purchased the article mrs day was so taken by surprise that she said 1 I cant say a word accompanied by a lady friend she walked around the hall and spoke in a manner expressive of her great appreciation of ahe respect her many friends of eureka had shown her the best of feelings prevailed and all enjoyed themselves until the small hours when the happy assembly ass embly retired feeling well satisfied and delighted with the
