Show -NIE W S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Emergency and crimes in W.H. Hilarie Orman STAFF WRITER Speeding might have a motorcyclist dearly when he lost control of his bike on Woodland Hills Dr. on Wednesday. April 29, at about 6:30 p.m. Swerving, he hit a rock and was thrown from the bike. His injuries looked minor, and he was taken on stretcher to Mountain View Hospital for treatment. Woodland Hills First Responder volunteers, a Salem ambulance, and Deputy Packer from the Sheriff's Department were on the scene. The deputy pointed out the skid marks on a curve near 725 Woodland Hills Drive, and the rear tire of the motorcycle had a clear scuff mark. The driver was not wearing a helmet. The driver was not known to be a resident of the city, but the motorcycle had a California license plate and a registration sticker for the year 2000. During the last two weeks there have been two reports of thefts in the city. Some of the city's tools were stolen, and a pop-up tent trailer was taken from an open garage at a residence. These are under investigation. Last week Deputy Jim Tindall told us that there had been a rash of thefts around the county. He had no more information about them, but said that they remain under investigation and have died down. As in any city, thieves are ready to remove anything unprotected. During the last few months several things, from tools to snowblowers, have been taken from unlocked areas in the upper part of the city and along Oak Drive. If something of value is unattended in the open, it may well disappear. No one has been charged in any of the thefts. A resident reported some form of theft involving the Internet and a check. There was no further information, but this is not the first report of such problems within the city. The National Consumers League has a website with advice about avoiding being caught in fraudulent activities, and there is a section devoted to Internet frauds. The website is at www.fraud.org, and there are many other websites with useful advice. Each week there a few calls to the sheriff's department about dogs running loose in the city. The city pays the county to pick up stray dogs, and owners pay impound and vaccination fees to the county animal shelter if they retrieve their animals.
