Show EDITORIAL COMMENT. Every self-respecting Republican in Utah should bow his head in shame at some of the raw work of which the majority in the lowTer house of the Legislature are guilty. IS ever has a body of law-makers and public servants exhibited such narrow-contracted partisan bias, as did the Republican members of the LTtah Legislature, when, on Monday, Mon-day, they voted in caucus in favor of cutting out the Democratic counties from receiving their share of the state roads appropriations. Two or three Republican members were manly enough to stand out against the proposition, and to remind re-mind the majority that such highhanded high-handed and tyrannical abuse of party power would be condemned throughout the btate. So, after all, the Democratic counties will probably get a small portion of the road fund. Rut whether they do or not, the Democrats can stand it if the Republicans who reside in Democratic counties can. In view of the above proceeding it is not surprising that Chaplain Joseph Porter felt moved by the Holy Spirit to deliver himself of the following political . prayer at the opening of the session of the House yesterday morning. Here is what Chaplain Porter prayed: "We pray thy special blessing upon the minority members of the house. We are under no obligations obliga-tions to them, but realize that they have" been neglected and are in sore need of help. Grant them thy mercy, and should they ever come to repentance and experience a change of heart, may their paths be strewn with roses and their lines cast in pleasant places." And he gets 4.00 for every prayer, and most of them are not nearly so good as the above one. It is an outrage on the public. Any leaky-nosed kid in the State could do as well, and would be glad of the job at two bits a prayer. The most astonishing thing is that when the prayer was heard a ripple of amusement spread among the Republican members. But the Democratic members promptly resented re-sented the insult. What a pity it is that the fool killer could not have made his appearance in the Legislature Legis-lature at the very beginning and taken most of the members away. |
