It is seldom that a .popular novel is dramatized so successfully, and not often Is so capable an all-around all-around caht soon hore. Ilex Beach's stirring story of, Alaska was delightfully told and gavo tho large audience a most enjoyable evening. eve-ning. Miss Helen Barnaul, as Ncciu, "the halfbreed, ' was fascinating in a very difficult part. It is a decided rest to see an actress so capablo of merging her own personality in that of tho character she is playin?. and just a word should be said of Miss Barham'a voice: It is wonderfully resonant and readily responds to every emotion, doing do-ing a great deal to quickly win tho sympathy of the uudience for the unfortunate un-fortunate Nccla. Mr. Norval mcGregor fulfilled all expectations and gave a gripping interpretation inter-pretation of Captain Meade Bunel, U. S. A. Mr MncGrcgor's work was excellent throughout tho entire play, but especially Oo during his scene with Nocla in the third act. Character work of u high class was done by Mr. Verne Layton, as Dan Stark. It was a part that might have been easily overdone, but Mr. Layton cleverly avoided tho melo-dramatlc and gave a clean-cut interpretation of an old stago type, the western "bad man." In fact, all of the company deserves .special credit. Miss Beatrice Mcado, us Alluna, was very good; Mr. William G. Solvin, as "No Creek Lee," was mute up to the general standard, and Mr. Will M Chapman, as John Gale, did somo oxcollent work. Polcan Sq-rot Sq-rot is not so important a character in the drama as In tho story, "but Mr. Georgo A. Cleveland got all there wus out of it In the second act Mr. P. N. Doyio did some very sood work in the part of Runnion. In fact, It to a,mp5t gratifying performance, per-formance, both" for those who have rend tho booX and those who got the story for tho, firat',tlmo last nght, and will be rememhored with pleasure by all who were fortunate onouch to see it. t |
