Show COSTLY STONE IN OREGON. Discovery of a Mine of Jade In the Far Northwestern State. A ery Important mlnornt discovery has Just been mado in tho Althouse district of Southern Joscphtno county, consisting of tho finding In considerable consider-able quantity ot tho sacred and raro stone, Jado. Sevornl miners visited Grant's Pass recently, bringing samples sam-ples of the stono with them, Bays tho Knnsas City World. Theso samples were positively Identified as Jado by United States Mineral Surveyor II. C. Perkins, of this city. The discovery is of great geological Import nnco, from tho fact that Jado has never beforo been found In any place In any of tho mineral districts of tho North American Ameri-can continent. Tho minors who hnvo come in from tho bcciio of tho dlseov-ory dlseov-ory report that many largo pieces of float Jado of beautiful color and line texture hnvo been and aro bolng found both on Althouse and Indian creeks. Jado Is tho sacred stono of tho Chinese Chi-nese and Is used by them In making bracelets, rings, vaiscs, etc. It Is a tough, compact stone. Its color vnrlcs from nn nlmost puro white to n dark or palo green. Jado was ono of tho first mntcrlals used in tho making ot wonpons and utensils during prehistoric prehis-toric times. There Is a coarsor or moro common variety of tho stono known as Jadclto that was used In making aes and weapons. Tho Jndo was and Is highly prized by tho poo-plo poo-plo of tho Orient for ornnmontal purposes pur-poses nnil carvings. Tho Chinese nnmo for It Is "yu-shlh," which menus "Jado stone." Tor ages past the main and principal supply of Jado has come from tho Knrn Kash valley of Eastern Turkestan. It Is also found to some extent In Now .oniami, tho islands oi tno I'acmc ami South America; but this Is tho first time thnt It has over been found on tho North American continent. Tho discovery In Southern Josephine county coun-ty will bo thoroughly Investigated by Interested parties. It Is of especial Interest to tho geological world. |
