Show How many more ? candidates and prospective presidents will the New York Herald mention? After going through the whole list of statesmen and politican-discussing their relative chance &c; then the writer settles down to solid business of making nominations. Once it is Hamilton Fish, who is a revised and improved edition of George Washington; and then the paper asserts that Grant is certainly the next republican candidate, and probably the next president and ? Grant has been as passive as Washington ever was in relation to the highest station in the government. Moreover, they resemble each other in their distaste and incapacity for ? and in selfrespecting reticence concerning their claims to public office and honors. They further resemble each other in their common repugnance to the shows and shams of vulgar politics. We would fein hope that it may eventually turn out that the parallel is maintained on the great point of earned fidelity to the theory and practice of republican institutions. |
