Show 7A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1983 Yellow Lawn Probably Due to Mineral Shortage Many lawns in Utah have been yellowing this year. The problem, say Utah State University .specialists, may stem from disappearance of nitrogen, iron shortage, insect damage, lack of water or disease. They fall in that order as most common lawn problems. Considering effects of the wet spring, the specialists say the chances are more than 50 percent that yellow in a lawn is due to either or both of the first two causes. Spring rains or excess watering may have dissolved all the nitrogen from fertilizer applied to a lawn and simply moved it past the grass roots. The result is a lighter green color in the lawn from lack of nmitrogen. Application of a high nitrogen fertilizer will help bring back the green color. Fertilizers that contain nitrogen in a slow acting sulfur coated urea capsule or as a long organic nitrogen chain that breaks apart slowly through the season may cost more but will last longer for a single application. Suspect that an iron shortage (iron chlorosis) is the culprit stealing green color from your lawn if you have been regularly applying lawn fertilizers containing nitrogen but the lawn has still turned yellow. Soils staying cool and wet too long combined with rise and fall of air temperatures may have caused iron in the soil to lock up and not be available to the plants. (ureafor-maldchyd- e) Usually on lawns suffering from lack of iron, you will see yellow patches, especially in shady or low spots on the lawn. You can green up the turf 'a lbs. of iron sulfor 5 to 6 weeks by applying fate per 1,000 square feet of lawn, or sulfur coated iron called ironsul or iron chelates. If iron shortage is your problem, you will get faster greening with a liquid iron product than a dry one. Spots turning yellow then brown in your lawn signal possible insect damage. Its not usually necessary to treat the entire lawn. If you see spotting of leaf blades, either tan with purple borders or purple brown spots with green centers, suspect disease. Applying fungicides such as Dyrene.Fore.Benlate, Tersan 1991 or Tersan LSR should help control the disease. 1 1 bill-bu- In all situations, check the soil moisture to be sure the yellowing is not just a lack of water.
