Show THE DENVER ELECTION. The election held in Denver last Meek resulted, among other things, in the election of Miss Emma" Ilerey to the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Miss Ilerey is a most estimable young lady, who will fulfill the duties of her office to the satisfaction of the people of Arapahoe county; she is. in every j way qualified, by education and experience, ex-perience, to administer the office t the entire satisfaction of the people. The fears expressed in some quarters that Miss Herey, because of her religious re-ligious belief, would not properly administer ad-minister her duties as Superintendent of Public Instruction, are as groundless as the fears of those who wished her to retire from the ticket before the elec tion simply because she was a catholic, and might therefore jeopardize the success suc-cess of th whole ticket on which, she was a candidate. She recognized, however, how-ever, that a principle was at stake and 'firmly and intelligently expressed the opinion vthat she sought the suffrages of the people as a Democrat and not as a Catholic. The result was her triumphant tri-umphant election a victory for principle princi-ple over expediency of true womanly bravery over arrant cowardice. Miss Herey, The Intermountain Catholic Cath-olic says: Bravo! To the people of Arapahoe Ar-apahoe county who elected her, we say: Well done; you have rlaced a fitting finale to the wave of fanaticism and bigotry which a few years ago swept over the Queen City of the Plains. Experience will show that no mistake has been made In trusting the public schools of Denver to the care of a cultured, cul-tured, educated and intelligent young woman, even though she be a Roman Catholic. |
