Show PEOPLES PARTY PARADE the people paraded on saturday february 8 if any one before then had a doubt as to which party the people of this city upheld and approved ro ved that doubt was swept away by ey a glance fiance at the brilliant spectacle on fast east temple street while the peopled people party thousands were marching along the streets to the music of a dozen bands and many drum corps there was a demonstration on friday evening the liberals had bad a parade whose principal features were disorder non rest resi dents and fireworks with a respectable number of spectators saturday nights demonstration was fully three times timen as large both as an to the number of spectators and the men in line who were bonafide bona fide residents of salt lake with the exception of the ogden band who held a place in the column as honored guests the most excellent order was maintained by the marchers barchers mar chers and to their shouts of the names of the peoples peopled candidates and their buzzas the vast assemblage sem blage of spectators responded with the heartiest cheers and froin froan the commencement to the close of the proceedings the most unbounded enthusiasm prevailed A careful observation gives the estimate of the number of spectators at not less im than while the number in the parade was ascertained certa ined by actual count to be there was a little delay in starting the procession the head of which formed at the corner of east temple Temp leand and north temple streets this was because the number in line was greater than was first an and divisions had to be moved back over the hill for room throughout the whole proceedings proceed all went merrily but one mishap of any note occurred and that was the burning burn lug of a fireworks wagon when near the emporium corner someone fired I 1 uto into one of the wagons and in an instant it was all ablaze and a panic ensued for a brief space red fire lit the scene and the bursting of bombs and the exploding of rockets made a great din while the display was awfully grand those who were in the wagon sprang out to save themselves and escaped with slight burns bums the horses became frightened and started off the driver mr John Harmon heroically remained at his bis post of duty and devoted his energies to keeping the plunging animals under control after going nearly half a block several men from the column seized the animals and they were released from the wagon and the fire extinguished during the march mud and stones were thrown at the men by hoodlums but vo one was seriously hurt one fellow was more prominent than his associates in endeavoring to create a disturbance and struck a short stoutly built marcher on the he side of the head the little man was on hand band however and with a well awell directed blow from his fist sent the assailant sprawling into the mud another interruption occurred a little below the walker house it was made by a drunken la individual rushing in between the cavalry blow blowing iuga a tin horn born and yelling 1 ij I can whip any man or set of men that belong to the peoples peopled party 10 he was repeatedly ordered from the ranks but refused to go and a policeman appeared and gave chase to the now retreating bully who ran into the crowd below thi steps of the walker house where he was caught by the policeman instantly a cry went forth from the crowd to the rescue 1 simultaneously one of the cavalrymen shouted enforce the city ordinance and a dozen men from the line made a dash toward the sidewalk per for a moment a conflict seemed imminent but the crow crowd d decided not to attempt to take the april prisoner from the officer some one cal called led out we were left unmolested by them last night and if any one from our ranks disturbs the peace tonight tou ight lot let him be handled this with an order from judge powers who was present to allow the police to do their duty soon put 1 an end to the disorder the el disturber was taken to the city hall where he gave his bis name as J I 1 merrill Merrl ll and 20 for his appearance all day long careful preparations were being made for the great spectacle of a lifetime in salt lake city the weather was all that could be desired and early in the evening the streets were crowded with masses of enthusiastic people business Bu ainess was generally suspended throughout the city and all those pa parts not con contiguous grous to the place of of f gathering wore v ore an air of loneliness but ut east temple street presented a vast pea of human faces the houses and business places of members of the peoples peopled party were beautifully decorated with the stars and stripes the display exceeding that of the evening previous in the profusion of national flags flaga and harmony of arrangements and the magnificent exhibit of the national colors had bad an inspiring effect and astae crowds gathered they filled the air with constant cheering in every direction business houses and private residences were ornament ornamented ted with chinese lanterns and illuminated with many colored light sand from dark until the marchers barchers mar chers dispersed there was one continuous glare from the numerous bonfires and the burning of fireworks of all kinds just after nine the bugle was sounded on the heights of capitol hill and soon after the cavalry were seen descending that eminence into the head of east temple street the line stretching over the hill and out of sight it was with difficulty that the advance guard made room for the approaching column which seemed to come in a never ending stream the sight was beyond description A blaze of light and glory assailed the eye from every quarter red bed lights lighta flashed from the to top of all high buildings while bonfires ton bonfires fires burnel in the street below the fiery tableaux from the top of the temple was one of the grandest sights imaginable A continuous stream of rockets and roman candles shooting high into the heavens from the head of main street down past fourth south produced a brilliant and beautiful picture harmonious with the electric lights that were now burning in all directions the central part or of the ity city seemed to be a seething sea of flames and from the bench above the town the grandeur of the view defies description the tens of thousands of spectators cheered themselves hoarse as they looked proudly upon the noble liaeff line of uniformed ormed and men bear ng the stars and stripes beautiful banners annera appropriate transparencies and torches when the column the of fireworks was such as has bos never before been witnessed in the inter mountain region for half an hour the shower poured from the columns heavenward and the people gazed in wonder and admiration mi ration n but feebly expressed even by the tremendous cheers when the procession disbanded all was again quiet except now and then an occasional bomb or rocket and only the decorations and a few lighted lanterns remained to attract attention when the peaceful sabbath was ushered in by the midnight hour THE COLUMN 1 the rho column formed in the order designated in the pro gramme A few minutes past nine all being in readiness the head bead of the column began to move southward from the neau head of main street and at it passed the NEWS corner the ogden band led the van dis cousing stirring music in splendid style next came the troop of cavalry the city guards numbering nearly and presenting a fine appearance one corn com any of them carried flambeaux which they discharged at intervals with fine effect next came a carriage draped with flags the wheels being twined with national colors next followed the guitar and mandolin club in their handsome uniform then marched members of the peoples peopled municipal central committee nominees on the peoples ticket bicket and members of the iture wearing laige and handsome sashes ashes next was a carriage drawn by shetland ponies bearing the midget drummers masters clawson and barrel next came the eighteenth drum corps and marching march I 1 ng club then followed the marching club and drum corps of the twentieth ward eight abreast and presenting a fine appearance the mclean rumel railroad dub club bearing rod red white and blue lanterns came next and formed a handsome and unique feature of the procession another 1 mar marching ebing club and drum corps succeeded and was followed by the silk bilk hat club rather a stylish feature 1 next came a detachment of marchers barchers mar chers from ogden bearing this transparency ogden boys we are no hogs bogs we W have had enough of liberal iberal I rule 13 4 next came two mar marching ebing clubs and druan corps corpe the second being bat of the seventh ward in the midst of which was this transparency n no powers in ours but onest 0 votes PI next was the eighth ward ard marching club and drum corps aps which were followed by a raw band the great drag utah profusely decorated with the national colors chinese lanterns etc came next filled with young ladies wearing costumes of red white and blue A smaller vehicle followed filled with young ladles ladies irk in like costume i it seemed as though the succession of marching clubs drum corps and brass bands would be interminable i each of the twenty two wards of the city furnished its quota tw ard and the steady rather rapid poo of the column the behold ot with the great number of friends and voters the peoples arty could muster f As the procession moved along fine fine feature succeeded another ut a detailed mention of each can cah lot be made here there was a remarkable nar kable number of elegant and costly banners displayed each ward aavang one or more and all bore mottoes tn expressive of lofty and patriotic sentiments i there were a larger large number of transparencies bearing sententious appropriate inscriptions among them were the following I 1 liberal success means heavy ies taxes axes j loose morals and high salaries liberal rule in ogden marshal compelled to drive the gamblers amblers and prostitutes from the rn streets because the city officers not transients must stay away from the polls albe be united and vote for young utah 11 bonfield great scott let us go P V 11 the column countermarched counter marched on fourth south street and when doubled upon itself it extended from that street to south temple making it eight blocks long when standing still 1111 in solid column which it did sifter after the ends had bad met while it standing anding thus fireworks in great prolusion profusion were discharged from the ranks |
