The two former were pals, while the two latter also formed a friendship friend-ship and kept by themselves. When the quartette arrived at Reed, Friday, Fri-day, they found no one at the section sec-tion house and, being hungry, Hernandez Her-nandez started to find a farm house where he could obtain food. He was followed by Dena and Vasquez, and, when about a mile and a half from the track, the two latter are said to have held Hernandez up and robbed him of ninety dollars, the community property of himself and friend. Hernandez also claims that the twain took his watch, but handed hand-ed the timepiece back, together with a ten dollar bill. Hernandez return-'ed return-'ed to the station and raised an alarm and officers from Mllford, Marshal Baxter, P. J. Adams and Special Officer Of-ficer Cleveland went out to Reed and, after a hunt, found the two Mexicans asleep or hiding, not far from the scene of their crime. When searched, the officers found two twenty-dollar bills and one ten on the men. They had evidently cached the gun and the remainder of the money. Saturday a complaint was sworn out against Dena and Vasquez, charging robbery, and on Sunday the officers again visited the scene of the hold-up. Not far from where the men were arrested the officers found the gun, which had evidently been dug from its concealment by a 'coyote or other animal, since . the arrest of the men. At first the men stoutly maintained their innocence, but on being confronted with the gun, are said to have weakened and confessed. They waived preliminary hearing before Justice Nichols, Monday, and were bound over for trial in the district dis-trict count, under bonds of $1000 each. |
