CLAS course teaches unity Ashley Robertson News Writer Teamwork is the name of the game for UVSC ' Distance Education as they attended their Second Annual Summer Workshop. Distance Education presented a day of cooperative activities for their employees in order to create coworker camaraderie and congruity. "We did activities and had presentations that were impressive and gave each employee an opportunity to face a fear or learn to trust another person in the department," said new DE Director John Krutsch. ''Watching folks on the ropes course provided valuable insight to personalities and brought us closer together making our team even more cohesive" The highlight of the workshop was when employees had the chance to challenge themselves and rely on their coworkers mentally and physically at CLAS Ropes in Provo. CLAS stands for Challenge Leadership Adventure Systems. They have a variety of problem solving activities, and obstacle courses designed toward creating success and effectiveness amongst groups of people. UVSC's nationally accredited Concurrent Enrolment program sponsored the third annual Educational Open House held on August 2nd and 3rd at the UVSC MATC Building. Utah and Wasatch County high school students attended the Open House where they were informed of the benefits concurrent enrollment provides for high school juniors and seniors. Concurrent enrollment is a program that's dedicated to provide high school students with a college education and college credits while still attending high school. Currently, the program has 6,558 students enrolled in 37 different UVSC departments. Concurrent enrollment, also, provides students with adjunct high school instructors that teach in their own high school campus, free college tuition, UVSC ID card/Ail-Sports pass, free bus pass, and a chance to earn a New Century Scholarship. The New Century Scholarship Program was created by the 1999 Utah Legislature to provide scholarship opportunities to high school students who complete the requirements of an associate degree or its equivalent at a state institution of higher education by September 1st of the same year as their high school graduation. The New Century Scholarship can equal 75% of an eligible student's tuition for up to two years-60 credit hours-at any of Utah's state operated institutions of higher education offering baccalaureate programs. Those scholarships used at Brigham Young University or Westminster College can equal 75% of the average tuition costs at the state operated institutions. However, scholarships will be canceled if the student fails to maintain a B average for any two consecutive semesters. "Concurrent Enrollment is a great opportunity to get ahead before students graduate from high school," said Spencer Childs, UVSC Concurrent Enrollment manager. "High school students should take advantage of the opportunity to take free college courses that count towards their high school diploma and their college degree." At the Open House, students where able to walk around to different booths to pick up information regarding distance education, academic advising, scholarships, financial aid, UVSC departments, prospective student services, and had an opportunity to apply for admission and pay their admission fee, as well as, enjoy refreshment, win amazing prizes and catch a glimpse of UVSC President William A. Sederburg. For more information regarding concurrent enrollment visit the concurrent enrollment office lactated inside the UVSC MATC Building on 987 South Geneva Road in Orem or call them at (801) 863-8376.
