Show FIRE AT LEAD, S. D. Forty Buildings Burned, Doing Damage Dam-age to Extent of 8500,000. Lead, S. D., March S. Fire which broke out this morning in the Dalken-burg Dalken-burg saloon consumed forty buildings before it was extinguished and caused a loss which is estimated at $500,000. The Deadwood fire department was called on for assistance and responded. ' In addition to the combined fire departments, de-partments, it was found necessary to blow up buildings in the path of the fire with dynamite in order to stop its spread. Owing to the high wind which was blowing, the scarcity of water and the inflammable nature of all the buildings, the firemen vre unable to do anything to stay the flames in any other way. The buildings consumed were the Dafkenburg saloon. Searles' meat market, mar-ket, Millie Kemps, photograph gallery; Marcoux. furniture; L. D. Jacobs, stationer; sta-tioner; Miners' union hall: YV. R. Deck-inson, Deck-inson, pharmacy; YV. B. Perkins, stationer; sta-tioner; L. P. Jenkins, pharmacist; Abe Fink, cigar manufacturer; Telephone building; Henry Jacobs, .hardware: Knester Bros., confectioners: Wolff Fink, jeweler; Bartlet, jeweler; telegraph tele-graph office; Fawcett & Delehanty; Cotton & Andrews, saloon, and a large number of dwelling houses. The big Horr.estake property was in danger at one time, but was not touched. touch-ed. None of the mining industries suffered. |
