EOE/AA Employer DITCH-BANK ASPARAGUS The way I view the matter is that one of nature’s riches, Is bunches of wild asparagus, by the irrigation ditches. In spring the water gets turned in, and there, in multitudes, Grow lots of little pointy spears, one of my favorite foods. You break ‘em off and eat ‘em raw. That is one good way, Or take ‘em home and bake ‘em in a tasty cheese soufflé. Just chop ‘em up and toss them with a salad, freshly picked, Or flood them with some hollandaise, like in Eggs Benedict. Pickled wild asparagus spears are so good you can’t beat ‘em, And being’s they’re free adds to the joy and pleasure when you eat ‘em. Feed ‘em to me any old way. I promise not to fuss, Let’s just say I’m fond of Wayne County wild asparagus. Some folks claim their ‘private spot’ to harvest this noble fruit. I say it’s mine if I should happen Poems written by Ray Conrad www.raymondconrad.com June 18, 2009 SUU FAMILY ADVOCATE/ TEACHER - PANGUITCH 35 Hrs/Week, 9-months/year; contingent on funding. Passport Rules At 82 years old, a man applied for his first passport. He was told he’d need a birth certificate, but his birth had never been officially registered. When he explained his dilemma to the passport agent, the response was less than helpful: “In lieu of a birth certificate,” the agent said, “you can bring a notarized affidavit from the doctor who delivered you.” The Sergeant-Major’s Circle During a training session at an artillery unit the sergeantmajor was busy describing how the sophisticated aiming device of the artillery weapon system is used: “As you all know, there are 180 degrees in a circle.” One of the soldiers put up his hand and said: “But there are 360 degrees in a circle, sergeant-major.” “You idiot,” replied the sergeant-major, “I am obviously speaking about a small circle!” It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale My friend, Layne Benschneider, who owns property near Orderville and is interested in “going back to nature” stopped by recently. She bought a book about living simply. I peeked in the back and found some good ideas I hadn’t heard about before. Here are some of my favorites: Cleaning carpet with potatoes - vacuum first, then scatter grated potatoes over it, brush in with a clean broom, vacuum or beat and it should be clean. To clean wood floor, use damp tea leaves, damp bran or fresh grass cuttings, they will settle and collect the dust. Sweep up. Potato starch - put finely grated potato in a pot of water. After 15 minutes, strain off potato and put the liquid into a bottle. Apply liquid only to the grease spot. To brighten unpolished wood furniture, wipe with cold tea. This brings out the grain and slightly darkens the wood. It has a tendency to make scratches less noticeable (didn’t say whether it was black or green tea) The book says mice don’t like the smell of peppermint. So it makes sense to grow peppermint around the house and to take leaves indoors and even spread a little of the peppermint oil around the house, (or on you). Peppermint is a good smell and has a calming effect. We know this because of what peppermint tea does for the stomach. I don’t know what mice make of it. I’m trying it because I still have trouble at our ranch with the little critters. So far (one week) so good. Send suggestions to Veda Hale Box 956 Panguitch, Utah 84759 or email Vedahalt@hotmail.com |
