Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 OBITUARIES Veda Young Glendale, AZ/Panguitch Veda Miller Young died June 12, 2009 in Glendale, Arizona. She was born January 20, 1921 to James Lazell and Ruth Agnes Reid Miller. Veda married Woodrow W. Young on September 29, 1941. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS temple on August 23, 1943. He preceded her in death. Veda was a beautiful, strong, classy woman of quiet dignity. She was loved and respected. She enjoyed serving and giving to her children and grandchildren. Veda loved spending summers at their cabin at Panguitch Lake and visiting with friends and family in Panguitch. Veda was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in the Primary, Young Women’s organization and Relief Society. Veda and Woodrow lived in Panguitch until 1968 when they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Veda lived in their home there until 2004, when she moved to Glendale, Arizona to live with her daughter and her husband, Dottie and Rod Cole. Veda is survived by her children, James Woodrow and Susan Young, Salt Lake City; Joan and Dennis Dana, Las Vegas, Nevada; William Ronald Young, Soda Springs, Idaho; Dorothy Ann and Rodney Cole, Glendale, Arizona; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister; Nyal Miller, Cedar City, Utah; Dorothy Cameron, Logandale, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow and brothers, Reid and Dan Miller. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Panguitch LDS 2nd Ward (200 N 400 E). Friends may call at the chapel Monday morning 9:30 - Obie S. Shakespear Tropic, Utah Obie Stolworthy Shakespear, 91, of Tropic, passed away June 11, 2009 in Panguitch, Utah. He was born May 3, 1918 in Tropic, son of William John and Matilda Ann Stolworthy Shakespear. A veteran of WW II, he served in the US Army from January 1942 to October 1945. He served mainly in the South Pacific. His medals include the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He married June Winters, December 17, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple and they raised ten children. He was a farmer and rancher he also worked 17 years for the US Forest Service. In 1997, the Canyonlands Soil Conservation District named Obie and June as Outstanding Farmers of the Year. In 2007, he was recognized as an Honorary Cowboy by Garfield County and Panguitch City at the annual Cowboys Ain’t Dead Yet Festival. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Obie is survived by his children, Mavis Strebel, Layton; Macailif (Susan) Shakespear, Leander, TX; L Dee (Tina) Shakespear, Page, AZ; Vance (Kathy) Shakespear, Cedar City; Esther (Bruce) Lloyd, Layton; Kelly (Pat) Shakespear, Tropic; Elna (Mark) Jeffery, Terra; Nelda (Darwin) Nef, Enoch; Joan (Warren) Platt, Newcastle; Gwen (Dan) Perry, Salem; 70 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Dixie Shakespear and brotherin-law Leon Parkinson. He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 siblings: Ellis, Preston, Mildred, Alton, E. R., Vernal, Golda, Ina, Mont, Eulla, and Aletta. The family expresses their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Garfield Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 12 Noon in the Tropic LDS Church. Friends may call at the chapel on Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Tropic Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Bryce Valley American Legion Post #18. Roman Platt, Elizabeth Platt and Hayden Adkins all of Henrieville attended SUU Summer Science Camp up Cedar Canyon. Roman and Elizabeth are the children of Nathan and Lori Platt and Hayden is the son of Robb and LoriLee Adkins. Fun adventures for all who attend this camp. We heard the Tom and Gaye Shakespeare are the proud grandparents of a beautiful new grandchild who is the third for their dauther Cherish. More details later as they are busy up seeing this wonderful new grandchild. The congregation of the Tropic Ward were treated to a beautiful musical rendition of “Come Thou Font” on the violins of LaNae, Caleb, and Sam Cloud. It was wonderful accompaniment to the talks by Carl Shakespear and Reed Le Fevre. Ron Cloud spent a great week attending Enginerring State Week at Utah State University. He thouroughly enjoyed his time there and learned many new and wonderful things to help him plan for his future. Ron is the son of Dan and LaNae Cloud of Tropic. Marva Fletcher has had all of her family here to give a loving send off to her grandson, Jack Fletcher, who is being deployed in the very near future to the middle east. He is the son of Marva’s son, John and his wife Fonda. Everyone came to support Jack as he prepares to serve his country. We wish him the best of luck and tell him to stay safe. The Cannonville Scout Trip and Camp to Maple Dell was cancelled due to the flu virus that is going around. They will now be going the last of July to this camp to learn more about scouting. Anna Dunham and grandson, J. J. went north to the wedding of Anna’s niece. J. J. recorded the wedding for the couple and they said it was a nice wedding. Anna’s brother performed the ceremony. They stayed and had a good visit for four days. Lester and Vertis Clarke enjoyed a visit from their daughter, Diane Lamb and husband Sherrill. It was nice seeing them again and know they had a great visit. Released from callings with a great vote of thank you for the work they have done are Layne and April Le Fevre who were the Webelos Scout leaders, Tonya Syrett who was the Pianist for the Relief Society, La Dora Baugh who was the chorister for the Relief Society and Carma Barton who was a Family History Consultant. Called to fill some of the positions were Jerry and Carol Pollock who were called to serve at the Webelos leaders. Kay Shakespear was called as Chorister and Shauna Talbot the Pianist in Relief Socity. Vicki Ahlstrom and MaryMiller Boyd were called to serve as substitute teachers in the Primary organization. Congratulatins to you all. The Young Women of the Henrieville ward had Girl’s Choice where they would choose a close friend or their Dad to come and have a good time at the Church. They played, “How Well Do You Know Each Other” and danced and had healthy snacks for a treat. The SENIOR CITIZEN menu for the 23rd thru the 25th. 23rd will be Beef Stew, cottage cheese, fruit and a dessert. The 24th will have Bar B Que Beef, baked potatoes, vegetables, and fruit. The 25th will be delicious pork chops, potatoes and gravy, vegetable, and fruit. Come and join us for these meals. They are very well done and are always delicious. She is the first child and beautiful daughter of John and Alysha Shakespear. Makaylee’s cousins, all eight of them showed up in full force for this wonderful occasio. Ryan Shakespear’s family of Cedar City, David Shakespear family of West Point, and Shelly Clement and son Ian of South Jordan. It is always great to get together. Henrieville Ward got a new Young Men’s Presidency. The outgoing presidency was given a big vote of thanks for their hard work and they were Dale Pollock the President, Daniel Rose the first counselor, and Ralph Chynoweth as the second counselor. Called to serve and fill the vacancies are Nathan Platt as President, Daniel Rose as first counselor, and Terry Clark as the second counselor. Congrations to you all. Home and roaming around the area getting back the feel of the area are Callan Barton of Tropic and Jason Hughes of Escalante, formerly of Cannonville. They served honorable missions and we welcome them home. Jason’s brother, Time was ordained an Elder and will be getting ready to go soon on his mission. Coming home the end of June is Wyatt Shakespear. Callan is the son of Brant and Shanna Barton. Jason is the son of Greg and Sabina Huges. Wyatt is the son of Kelly and Pat Shakespear. Preparing their papers for a mission call are Ryan Moore and Curtis Mortensen. Ryan is the son of Frankie and Gayle Moore of Henrieville and Curtis is the son of Andy and Shauna Mortensen of Henrieville also. Dustin Leslie is now in the MTC getting ready to go out to Montana for his mission. He is the son of Bonnie Jane Leslie. A reminder to the Cub Scouts in the Bryce Valley Area, Day Camp is being held this Friday and starts Explore Escalante LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the editor, I wish to thank, the local 4H group especially Cassie Lyman she came to my home to deliver a handmade card signed by many young people who must have made it. The card was a thank you for my service in the military. I was honored that they thought of me. The 4H must be a great organization to teach the young people to honor our veterans.
