This exhibition will open Friday, January 16, and continue on display through Saturday, February 28, 2004. An opening reception at which awards will be announced will be held January 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Awards presented will include monetary awards: First, Second, and Third. Opening in our Carriage House Gallery on the same evening, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., will be an exhibition with works by the Hamblin family—paintings by Darlene, and wood turning by her husband Bert and son Terry. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. The 9th Black & White Statewide, a juried competition, is open to recent works by Utah artists. Original work in all media, including paintings, prints, monoprints, drawings, graphics, photographs, pottery, sculptures, and textiles are eligible. Works displayed will be in black, white, and/or shades of gray. The jurors for this competition are Mark Biddle, Professor of Fine Art, Weber State University; and Scott Knauer, Weber State University Gallery Director. “Art has always been an important part of my life. Even while I was raising six children, I found precious minutes to sketch.” Darlene states. Darlene Stevenson Hamblin taught art privately for 18 years, enjoying the fellowship and inspiration of her students. “Everyday I see new and exciting subjects waiting to be portrayed in art.” Bert Hamblin has worked with wood much of his life. He started turning small functional items for his family. He soon realized that his peppermills were functional pieces of art. Bert has toyed with different designs and a variety of wood species in the creation of his mills. He enjoys cutting the wood in various thicknesses then gluing them together in an attempt to enhance wood grain. “Each peppermill is unique and beautiful; no two are alike.” Terry Hamblin says, “I have always enjoyed transforming simple pieces of wood into oneof-a-kind creations. Most of the time I don’t know what my work is going to look like until I’m almost finished with it. I believe that’s one of the characteristics of art.” The public is also invited to visit the Eccles Community Art Center and Carriage House Gallery during regular gallery hours. Regular Gallery Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. For more information, please call 801-392-6935. Readin’ in Eden Readin’ in Eden, a community based reading group, will hold their next meeting on January 15, 2004. The selected book that will be discussed is the five people you meet in heaven, by Mitch Albom, the author of the number one New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie. In the five people you meet in heaven, you meet Eddie, the main character—a grizzled war veteran who feels trapped in a meaningless life of fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. Just as the park has changed over the years, so, too, has Eddie— from optimistic youth to embittered old man. His days are a dull routine of work, loneliness, and regret. Then, on his 83rd birthday, Eddie dies in a tragic accident while trying to save a little girl from a falling cart. With his final breath, he feels two small hands in his—and then nothing. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a lush Garden of Eden, but a place where your earthly life is explained to you by five people who were in it. These people may have been loved ones or distant strangers, yet each of them changed your path forever. One by one, Eddie’s five people illuminate the unseen connections of his earthly life. As the story builds to its stunning con- clusion, Eddie desperately seeks redemption in the still-unknown last act of his life: was it a heroic success or a devastating failure? The answer, which comes from the most unlikely of sources, is an inspirational as a glimpse of heaven itself. In the five people you meet in heaven, Albom gives the reader an original story that will change everything you’ve ever thought about the afterlife—and the meaning of our lives here on earth. The story is a timeless tale, appealing to all. Read the book then come and share your perspective, or just come and hear what others have to say about the story. Readin’ in Eden is a good way to meet your Valley neighbors, and to participate in interesting dialogue. Everyone is invited to attend. The next meeting on January 15 will be held at the home of Chris Eakle’s, 4797 E. 3900 N., in the Patio Springs Subdivision in Eden at 7:00 p.m. If you plan to attend, please RSVP Chris at 745-3291. The Readin’ in Eden reading group is an open forum for adults of all ages and gender. The following meeting will be held February 12 at the home of Kathleen Peterson. The book to be discussed is To Say Nothing of the Dog, by Connie Willis.
