Ogden Valley Pathways Announces Officers for New Year On Wednesday, January 7, the community has the opportunity to provide input on what new trails should be built in Ogden Valley during the 2004 year. January 7 is the date of the next monthly meeting of Ogden Valley Pathways. Since funds are currently available for pathways construction, Pathways plans to accomplish a lot of work throughout the coming year, they would like to hear from the community! If you like to mountain bike, hike, and/or horseback ride; or even if you just want a safe alternative to driving—walking to your destination instead of traveling in a car, please plan to attend this brief but important meeting that will be held on January 7, at 7:00 p.m., at the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville. Ogden Valley Pathways will use these next few months to prepare for the construction and maintenance of a network of trails throughout the Valley. Pathways already has a master plan that outlines a list of “first phase” building projects within the Valley, but needs, and wants, your ideas on how to prioritize these projects. Also on January 7, the new Pathways officers for the upcoming year will be introduced, and an update on Pathways’ spring work schedule will be presented. The organization was recently awarded a Federal grant for the creation of pathway projects in Eden, so there will be a flurry of activity once the snow melts. In coming months, Pathways will be developing a 2004 trail maintenance plan; and be providing updates on exciting upcoming fund-raising events, and several Ogden Valley Pathways ended 2003 by selecting a new slate of officers for the 2004 year. New officers are: Helene Liebman of Eden, Chair Brandon Fuller of Eden, Vice Chair and Construction/Maintenance Coordinator Debbra Wheatley of Huntsville, Fundraising Coordinator Sharon Holmstrom of Eden, Neighborhood Trails Coordinator Pathways projects for next year will include trail building, trail paving, maintenance, field trips, and an essay contest for Valley students, and participation in Huntsville’s 4th of July celebration and Eden’s Balloon Fest. The Ogden Valley Chapter of Weber Pathways is a group of volunteers devoted specifically to the creation of a network of non-motorized pathways in Ogden Valley. We love the rural lifestyle of this beautiful valley, and believe that pathways can help enhance and preserve it. Please join with us the first Wednesday of every month, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville to learn about current and future projects, provide input, and become involved in helping to create and maintain pathways in beautiful Ogden Valley. scribed to preschool children. Assessing the impact these medications have on preschool children is very important, McVaugh said, because a preschooler’s brain is in its most rapid and critical stage of development. The four-week study is scheduled to begin January 8, 2004 and will be held at the Family Support Center (950 E. 12th St.) in Ogden. Participants in this study must be five years old or younger, and currently taking a prescribed dosage of a stimulant medication for ADD/ADHD under the care of their physician. There is no cost for participating in the study. “Our research will help parents better understand how these medications affect their child,” said McVaugh. He said the study might also lead to new techniques in helping children with the disorder. Parents or legal guardians interested in having their child take part in the study should contact McVaugh at 801-626-6660, or research assistant Cami Shorten at 801589-6906. ‘Tis the Season The Eden Post Office crew takes a breather, while wading through a maze of packages to be delivered during the holiday season. Professor Bill McVaugh is a licensed psychologist whose research focuses on children. The purpose of his research is to determine the benefits of using stimulant medications for treating young children with ADD/ADHD. The study has been reviewed and approved by WSU’s Institutional Research Board for Human Subjects, which works to protect research participants by maximizing anticipated benefits and minimizing possible risks of harm. “The FDA has approved the use of these medications for children six years of age and older, but little research has been done on the effects of these drugs on children under six,” McVaugh stated. Despite the lack of research, these drugs are commonly pre- John Klisch of Eden, County Ordinance Coordinator $5 KIDS (6-12) 1-day ticket $15 ADULT 1-day ticket $20 ADULT 2-day event ticket Gates open both days at 7 a.m. Action starts both days at 8:30 a.m. Children with ADD/ADHD Needed for Study From Ogden, take I-84 east to Croydon Exit 111.
