Show (2 &!?& EDITORIAL BR33 PAGE W Sabbath Day is intended to provide with a great spiritual uplift. And it will do this very thing if we observe it properly. It also is a sign of our covenant with God, and was so instituted by Him in ancient times. By observing it we 'anifert to Him that we love Him and will live as He asks us to. But the Sabbath also is a day of rest. In the wisdom of God He decreed that one day in seven was to be a rest day, when we would desist from all our labors. The m- He had a dual purpose, and each part was recessary. Having made our bodies, He knew what they require, both in nourishment and in rest. He also knew that our spirits need Hence the spiritual factor in the Sabbath. Let us talk about the matter of resting from our usual labors. Howr valuable is this rest? sus-fenanc- e. IN A RECENT issue of TWAs Ambassador Magazine appeared a copyrighted article by Lynwood M. Rhodes, emphasizing the value of rest in relation to the health of our bodies and our ability to produce during our working hours. In spoke primarily of vacations and holidays. He said that men, who fail to take vacations, drastically reduce their effectiveness, and added that large corporations now are greatly concerned when their men fail to take regular vacations. He quoted Dr. Nelson J. Bradley, chief of psychiatric services at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, as saying that such an one spends five hours overtime on what he could otherwise accomplish in one hour. EDMUND G. PABST, executive vice president of Combined Insurance Company of America has said that the good executive d is a man. Our men do a much well-reste- better job after a restful vacation. His insurance records show that the work addict is 75 percent more likely to have a heart attack than his more relaxed vacation-goin- g counterpart. Executives who pride themselves on never taking a vacation often become dictatorial which usually results in lower employe morale and more feuds between employe groups, while work becomes slip-sho- d. Dr. Alexander Hirschfield of the department of psychiatry !n Wayne State University, Detroit, urges that entire families take vacations together to provide greater family cohesion, but he also urges that husbands and wives occasionally should take short vacations by themselves away from the children to restore the romance of the past. SO TIIE EXPERTS all agree that vacations are essential. But they also agree that even one days rest is good. That is what the Lord provides through His Sabbath. But the Lords plan does not stop with mere physical rest. His plan provides for physical rest PLUS a reanimation of our spirituality. Rest from usual activities combined with spirituality, then, is the divine pattern. To merely rest on the Sabbath is not to observe the Sabbath. There is no Sabbath observance without Worship! No commandment is more sacred than the law of the Sabbath. No believer in God can excuse himself from it. Saint should deEVERY LATTER-DAtermine to honor this law, resting from his usual duties, worshipping the Lord by attending his regular meetings, and maintaining an appropriate and sacred demeanor throughout this holy day. They carry a message of encouragement. They are a second witness in the home. To assist families, the Church has organized a wide range of activities ulwe young people can ind wholesome companionship and personal development for all ages. The church teaches that the wife is to he a companion to her husband and stand by his side. There is to be no confusion as to the roles of husband and wife. Children are to identify with a strong, manly father. They identify with a lovely mother who sustains and supports hut does not usurp the leadership of the father. The mother is queen of the home. The family as an institution is under tremendous pressure. It is therefore, impoi taut to know III it the family is a problem--omg unit. The husband and v ife cannot generate mme piob-Icni- s than they can solve if they will follow the counsel the Loid WEEK ENDING MARCH . 28, 1970 has given. The solution to family problems is not sepai ation. but. repentance. Couples are to continue to court, to pray, to be one. They are to keep alive the magic and thrill of romance and learn how to express love. Couples young and old must learn to communicate with one another. This one tiling alone can solve most marital problems. The challenge to the family is great. We are here to practice successful family living. Proper family living makes Heaven on Earth and develops Gods in embryo. Success in the home, leads to the abundant life with our Eternal Father. MkN IN MODERN SCRIPTUkE Brigham Young In 1838, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation calling the Twelve Apostles to go over the great waters, and there promulgate my gospel, the fulness thereof, and hear record of my name." The Twelve were to leave Far West, Mo., April 26, 1839. Because of persecution, however, some were delayed. Brigham Young was detained a full year. On Jan. 19, 1841, the Prophet received revelation naming the general officers of the Church, including: I give unto you my uwant Brigham Young to be a president over the Twelve traveling council; which Twelve hold the keys to open up the authority of my kingdom upon the four corners of the earth President John Taylor, in a priesthood address in the Assembly Hall, Oct. 7, 1881, describes the first meeting of the Twelve in Great Britain: When the Twelve arrived in England, a meeting of the quorum was held in Preston. And there was a vote taken by the Twelve at the meeting, and the vote was unanimous, that Brigham Young should be accepted as president of the Twelve Apostles, Following the death of Joseph Smith, the presiding authority of the Church fell to the Twelve, and as president of that body, Brigham Young directed the affairs of the Church completing the Nauvoo Temple, guiding the expulsion from Nauvoo, and leading the Saints across the plains to Great Salt Lake Valley. This he did from the death of the Prophet Joseph, June 27, 1844, until a conference of the Church in December 1847 3V years later at which, as president of the Council of the Twelve, he was sustained as president of the Church. The appointment of the Pesident of the Church is explained in Priesthood and Church government as follows : When the President of the Church dies or otherrelinquishes his oflice, the responsibility of choosing his successor under revelation falls upon the Council of the Twelve. The senior member, if qualified, succeeds to the office. He is ordained by the Council of the Twelve, who hold all the authority wise vested in the priesthood of the Church." Brigham Young served as President for 30 years, until his death in 1877, at age 76, in Salt Lake City. |
