The crux of the change will be (ased on testing procedures which will require students to prove their competency in five basic areas before they graduate. GAYLE Stevenson, assistant superintendent of Davis School District, said the biggest issue facing school administrators is in completing the tests which will demonstrate this competency. He said the Utah State Board of Education has set up the standard, but leaves to the local boards the question of how meet to the requirement. The competency requirements provide that a student be able to function in society in these areas1 reading, writing, speaking and listening, high. Ninety to ninety-fiv- e percent of the students must eventually pass. We cant have a higher percentage than that fail to graduate. Once completed, the test will be administered by remedying counselors in the schools. Dr. Mike Shaw from the school district will instruct counselors on how the test should be administered, Mr. Stevenson said. THE DISTRICT has been working with principals and supervisors of subject areas to come up with a competency test. The battery of tests will not come from a standarized test, although Mr. Stevenson said some segments from that type of test may be incorporated in the final product. At present the plan is in embryo. ADDITION to the competency testing, the new requirements for graduation specify that each student develop a tentative career goal which will be decided upon by the students, counselors and the parents. In addition to the academic subjects required, the students must have one of the following: one semester of school supervised work experience, one semester of school super Whatever plan is adopted, we will have to beef up the of process deficiencies, Mr. Stevenson said. IN vised science experience, or an approved area of concentration related to the students career goal. The plan calls for the supervised work or science experience to help students to explore a career prior to graduating from high school. The program will be designed to provide entry level skills, as well as extending competencies in the academic areas. THE WORK experience requirement is a minimum of one hour per day for the semester of work experience or 75 hours total during the semester. The new graduation requirements also sfiecify alternative ways of earning credit, which can be adopted to individual lifestyles. This program would allow some relaxation of the requirement that each student stay in school for six semesters even if he has completed the 15 hours required for graduat- IN addition to the comperequirement, the complete an individualized program, which includes career exploration, and fill the attendance requirements established bv the local district in conformance with state law. Mr. Stevenson said that Davis Schixil District "is going slowly in setting up standards competency Sometimes speed hurls There have been areas in which some schools have innovated too fast." If the tests are administered and screen out too many students from high school graduation, the testing will not accomplish its purpose. AT PRESENT the district plans to administer the test to tenth grade students, some- the late fall. Mr. Stevenson said the current plan is to test tenth grade in students on an eighth grade efficiency basis. We toyed with the idea of testing students at the ninth grade level since there would be a longer time for remediation, but rejected it." The problem the district is trying to resolve is what to do with students who fail the competency tests. THEY could either be given a special class or more of the same, Mr. Stevenson said. .One big danger is setting the standards for the test too ? 5349 South 1900 04m, Wot Utoh in Roy time! THE requirements allow such alternate ways of earning credit as summer school courses, special courses, examinations, correspondence from accredited colleges or universities, and performance in special experimental programs such as work study. SUCH fortitude. Such en- durance. Such masochism. My children are just us charming and loved and as good company as any other mothers children, but I suppose my endurance is lower than most. I have years of Augusts behind me, each marked off as one day nearer to the time when school starts and the teachers can keep them occupied MINE aren't really children any more. They're teens and big ones at that, but by this time of the summer, all the exciting things have been done, their friends are all off on a final vacation and there isn't much left to do except work and who wants to do (haP I thought as they got older the problem of the restless teens would cease to concern me No so. Ive tried sewing in name tags, but that just makes for holes in the back where they get ripped out. I've tried locked closets, but they make secret bargains to trade and someone doesn't wash a new blouse or someone spills something and says she didn't." "Oh, I know how to settle that one. Hope flickered in her eyes. "Just let each girl have one style, like a uniform HARRY tried that." She slumped again. They argued for two weeks about who got which style. "Where are you going-1non-sto- p She slid to her feet and straightened her shoulders. "Im running away from home. I told them Id come back when school starts." Poor Hazel.
