Show INDIVIDUAL AND PARTY VIRTUE Where you find individual and family honesty and purity there is no denying the fact that you will also find a community pure and honest The larger the percentage percent-age in the family on an average of that class who cannot be trusted the lower the state of community mor rals is something that no man unless un-less he be a so called Liberal would I even so much as deny That the carpetbag I carpet-bag Liberal would deny this or anything else that did not tend in its nature to show that the only test of honesty or purity was I to be opposed with force and vindictiveness to everything Mormon or that belonged to the Peoples party wo do not question However How-ever the denial of a truly loyal carpetbag Liberal simply adds force to tho position taken by anyone on any subject Coming back to our proposition again what is the position of the individual members mem-bers of the Peoples party 3 It is admitted even by as rank an enemy of that party as W H DICKSOX a man who shoved less of the milk of human kindness and more hate and vindictiveness in the prosecution of cases under the EdmundsTucker act than any other man who has held the position of United States prosecuting attorney in this territory that cMormon people condemn sexual sex-ual crimes while the other religious denominations de-nominations or sects deplore the existence exis-tence of that class of crimes We all recall re-call the gentlemans speech wherein tho above admission in substance was made He was trying with his usual energy to get a conviction under the act of Congress and in his zeal ho unwittingly paid ono of the highest compliments to that great majority of the Peoples party tho Mormon portion por-tion that it was possible for him to have done had ho receivedthe usual retainer and tho fee for appearing in court as well It is true beyond question that there is here less of the social evil which is damning the soul and body of so many in this nation than is to be found outside of Utah or insido ol of it for that matter if we go to tho ranks of the Liberals That there are honorable exceptions to a disregard for virtue and honesty among tho Liberal party we do not doubt nor would we for one moment try to convey one idea to the contrary It is however acase of poor dog Tray and we will hail with delight the day when wisdom and sad experience if these shall bo necessary shall teach those who are honorable that they are in bad company One of the greatest causes of crimes of all kinds and almost the forerunner in every case is the use of liquor When we say that individually the Peoples party leads the world from a temperance standpoint and therefore leads it in a community capacity no man living can truthfully deny the accuracy of THE HERALDS statements made before our last election that over 90 per cent of the gamblers saloonkeepers drunkards and loose women are members of tho socallei Liberal party The Liberal increase of taxes by multiplying multi-plying them by five in Ogden the Liberal expenditure of funds in Tooele so that it took eight years to recover from the hopeless hope-less bankruptcy brought on by the four years rule of the Liberals the liberal expenditure ex-penditure of money that comes from taxation taxa-tion on improvements and real estate and not from the assessment of a grip jack are what Chief Carpetbagger Pow cies and company are working for but what they will fail to get provided the members of tho Peoples party will do their full duty and THE HEKVLD is confident that they will do that duty and do it in a way to make the carpetbagger seek for other pastures green The following from an editorial in the Salt Lake Tribune the chief organ of the carpetbag Liberals illustrates more forcibly forci-bly than words of ours could possibly do what kind of purity the Liberals desire to see prevail in our fair city II It may be a hard thing to say and perhaps harder still to maintain but I believe that billiard I bil-liard halls saloons and houses of ill fame are more powerful reforming agencies here In Utah than churches and schools or even than the Tribvne What the young Mormons want Is to be freed So long as they are slaves It matters not much to what or to whom they are and they can be nothing At all events I rejoice when I see the young Mormon hoodlums play ing billiards getting drunk running with bad womenanything to break the shackles they were born In and that every socalled religious or virtuous Influence only makes the stronger Some of them will go quite to the te of course bufllft is better to for they aro made of poor stuff and since there is no good reason why they were begun for let them soon be done for and the sooner the better Most of them however will soon weary of vice and dissipation and be all the stronger for the knowledge of It and of Its vanity At the very least they will be free and it is of such vital consequence that aman should be free that in my opinion bin freedom is cheaply won at the cost of some familiarity with low life And while It is not desirable in itself it Is to me tolerable because it appears to offer the only inducement strong enough to entice men out of slavery into freedom Freedom is the first requisite of manhood and it It can be won without excesses so much the better If It cant never mind the excesses win the freedom It Is not you who are responsible when it comes to that it is those who have enslaved jou One actually shudders when he reads such damnable sentences as he feels that one at least of tho emissaries of hell is hero on earth and that ho penned tho above words which aro calculated to damn soul and body if the advice be taken Honesty and virtue in individuals in communities and in governments are THE EIniiALDs motto today and always have been and will be and it is because we desire these to prevail that wo aro first last and always for the Peoples party t I There aro counties in this fair territory where ttfero cannot be found a singe I Liberal voter and neither can there b6 found in those counties a gambler a saloon or a loose woman It is history of this kind which the Peoples party makes in contradistinction to the history made in Ogden where to maintain somedegree of decency morally it became necessary for tho United States marshal to take a hand in the suppression of the vice so openly flaunted on tho streets and in the gambling dens Wo have heard surprise expressed that as bitter and relentless an enemy of the Mormons as W H DICKSON should have complimented them on their detestation of sexual crimes and their desire to suppress them TilE HERALD assures its readers that the compliment was entirely unintentional unin-tentional He was fearful lest his victim might be declared guilty of sexual associa tion outside of the marriage relation Tho absolute necessity of protection for the individual virtuo1 of somo of the Liberal voters is more forcibly illustrated by our beloved m SLIS addition of the words in the marriage mar-riage relation to the test oath which Congress Con-gress had prescribed for all voters in Utah Tho remarks of friend DICKSON Provo that there was no necessity for tho addition so far as the members of the Peoples Peo-ples party were concerned Self preservation is tho first law of nature na-ture Our respected I but lost and lamented ELI no doubt appreciated tho necessity ne-cessity of protecting his chosen party hence tho addition in the marriage rela tion for tho protection of the moral 1 upright up-right and free I government of the American gentlemen I Have they become such by following in ho path that they suggest should be followed lowed by the young Mormons American gentlemen I Progressive party 1 Upright party 1 Moral
