Show CEU Friday February 14 Etiquette over the years By Jaime Hartzell staff writer The word etiquette to many produces negative emotions those of distaste and pureobjection Etiquette can be defined simply as "the manners acceptable in society" Etiquette has always been around and has changed over the years Many aspects have been handed down and slightly altered though some have remained unchanged Many aspects have been interwoven into our everyday actions without us realizing it Some of these actions include introductions bridal showers the throwing of rice on the newlyweds swearing etc Just as times change so do customs What was acceptable in the 20s may be a sign of poor taste today For example in the 20s the death of a loved one meant secluding oneself and receiving no visitors for three weeks They were then to make no personal visits themselves until six months after the death Social functions such as balls and the opera were not accepted until after a full year This mannerism at the time was accepted but today the customs are not nearly as strict Respect for the deceased is expected but society dictates a more individualistic approach Many aspects have remained the same For instance when it comes to introductions men should be introduced to women and youth should be presented to their elders This still holds true and is mostly outof respect William DeWitt Hyde in his book Practical Ethics said "Politeness is proper respect for human personality" Other objects of etiquette remaining the same is bridal showers Bridal showers began as a charming way of presenting gifts that would seem too trifling if they were presented alone Now they are held by close friends and family of the bride to show their love and best wishes for the couple's Love caring and calories have become Valentine traditions By Mary Lucille Purcell Valentine's Day traditionally involves love caring and calories How did all this begin? It seems that cards candy and the beginning of life involve affairs of the heart It is a day that has been dedicated since the 14th Century to lovers and is observed by the sending of messages and gifts usually employing the motif i of a red heart by young men and women day Another tradition attributes the observance of the day to the fact that it falls within the mating season for One tradition derives the customs of the day from the old Roman appropriate season for young people to choose their "valentine" or lovers SL February feast called the Lupercalia us-a- Tickets available seniors from Granger High Juab Union San Juan Monticello homemade valentine messages became common The greeting card industry in the United States now prints millions of valentines each year These are usually in verse and tender in nature but sometimes maidens drew partners by lot for the coming February feast Later this Bridal Fair sceduled for new life Another idea that has survived time is that of a rice shower on the newlyweds Today with the ever increasing divorce rate many wedding attendants may choose to throw minute rice Following the present trends and an ever changing society many problems have come up One of the biggest problems we see is how to treat a "lady" whether she is your mother or your date to the prom It was practically required years ago to treat a woman like fine china Today it is hard if not impossible to distinguish between the traditionalists and the women liberationists When a man and a woman approach a doorway there are many ideas racingthrough your head You could either open the door and have her think you are boosting you r ego or not open the door and have her think you are failing in your "manly duties" This is not the only problem The idea of who is to pick up the tab for dinner raises questions also Should you pay and have her think you are patronizing her or let her pay and think you are cheap There are many options but the problem is finding the acceptable options for each individual As members of society we have to deal with all manners of etiquette One thing that was found distasteful and still is is the use of language and the abundance of vulgarity Dr Crane famous essayist and philosopher said "The superior man is gentle It is only the man with the defective vocabulary that swears All noise is waste" The majority tend to agree Every day we come in contact with people whether strangers or friends who judge us by what we do and say They go away carrying an it depends upon our manners whether it is a good impression of nd impression or a bad impression Manners aren’t meant exclusively for the prom or the formal dinner Society isn't formal We are like huge magnets and attract those things which we ourselves send out Who of us have not heard the uncultured student say that he is not restricted by any "sissy manners" And who of us have not heard the faculty member decline an invitation to a reception because they "had no time for such nonsense" To a great many people manners mean nothing but nonsense but you will find that they are almost invariably people who never win social or business distinction You do not have to observe the lawsof good conduct if you do not wish to You may do as you please and say what you please but you must not complain when you find the doors of good society closed against you And when you find that people of good manners and correct social conduct avoid you and bar you from their activities then do not be surprised 1988-- 5 trip LDS had initiations for new BSU (Black
