- 1’ m College of Eastern Utah’s winter quarter enrollment continued to go up even though the normal college enrollment attrition rate usually dictates the opjwsite at most campuses Because of normal enrollment attrition rate at college campuses winter and spring quarters ui'ivtfiy declines it is significant that College of Eastern Utah’s enrollment has gone up over fall quarter Lower enrollments the second two quarters are an indication of student's dropout rate after completing fall quarter Winter quarter's enrollment is 1575 up 208 over fall quarter 1985 r-- V Price Utah 84501 Development and Counseling Center (DACC) Regular registration will be March 24 from 9:00 am to 4 pm Night registration will be March 24 and 25 from 5 pm to 7 pm CEU's President Michael Petersen was naturally happy to hear the enrollment statistics 'This is following the enrollment growth chart that the institutional goals forecast that we must achieve in order to make the 2000 student enrollment needed here in the next ten years We were a little behind in our enrollment goals fall quarter 1945 but have more than compensated for it with the winter juarter enrollment surge” Communityto colleges are viable part of higher education Price City Mayor Art Martines has joined President Ronald Reagan in a special declaration of February 1986 as National Community College month and more specifically of supporting the College of Eastern Utah in commemoration of this month ”As an alumnus of CEU I have always enjoyed my affiliation with it and as Mgyor of Price I am proud of the opportunity it offers area students to enhance their understanding and appreciation of education” President Reagan signed Senate Joint Resolution 158 specifying February 1986 as National Community College Month in October 1985 The house passed the measure by a 41(H) vote as did the senate in a unanimous vote The joint resolution supported the community college system because 40 percent of all undergraduate college students in the United States are enrolled in the 1221 junior and technical colleges Those colleges help prepare people for employment in over 1400 different occupations for transfer four-yea- r - universities These colleges and colleges are within reasonable commuting distance for more than 90 percent of all Americans and provide an opportunity to obtain education at low cost for many people who could not otherwise afford one post-seconda- ry Community colleges are community-base- d institutions which provide flexible and diverse programs and services tailored to fit the needs of their local populations ' and industries The American Association of Community and Junior Colleges is utilizing the theme of Opportunities with Excellence” for the national observance The association listed some pertinent facts concerning the impact of community and technical colleges in the American Educational system Some of those include that more than 32 million credit students are attending community colleges Thousands of local business persons public leaders and citizens serve on advisory committees of the technical programs to provide a close tie to the communities and expert direction for college instruction Colleges have estimated that for every 1 of tax support provided they return $4 to the economy For every 81 awarded by the federal government in support of vocationtechnical education state and local governments spend 810 or more On average the college participates in 15 or more partnerships with local business and industry annually providing special training programs research and other resources designed to improve business effectiveness SomeofCEU include data partnerships office processing occupations computer science and others The colleges work directly with thousands of local organized labor unions offering academic preparation portion of apprenticeship similar to the program CEU has set up with the area Utah Power A Light plants State support for public community technical and junior colleges amounted to 53 percent of total budgets in 1984 and federal support was approximately 26 percent According to a recent report every student who completes a community college program can expect to psy to society six to ten times more than a person who does not matriculate Student characteristics of community colleges do not vary radically with those who are at four-yeinstitutions According to the American Association of Community Colleges and foil-ti75 percent of all part-tim- e credit students hold down jobs while they are attending colleges Many of these students are seeking to upgrade their skills for their current jobs preparing for job ar two-ye- changes ar or investigating the possibilities available in new fields More than half of the credit students are women Studies indicate that many students persist in their efforts to complete degree programs with students graduating in as many as 1 1 years after the date they first entered college Approximately 16 percent of credit students receive federal Pell Grants while 65 percent of these students are part-tim- e The average age of community college students Is between 27- - and with the trend continuing for an increasingly older student population Community colleges are making a significant contribution to higher education quote national AACJC leaders Because nearly 40 percent of all postsecondary students in the US are enrolled in community colleges they are the single largest component in all of higher education Close to 55 percent of all e freshmen in credit programs in American colleges are enrolled in r colleges Minority students represent 20 percent of all community college students Of this number 555 black are 299 are Hispanic percent and 146 are Asian The 1221 community colleges make up about of all institutions in the US first-tim- two-yea- one-thir- d post-seconda- ry |
