Show BRITISH STEAMER BATTLES U-BOAT Tales of Desperate Encounter Off Coast of Africa Told in DetaiL PHILADELPHIA. Pa.. May 22. Tale of a desperate encounter with a German submarine off the nort h coast of Africa were told by sailors of a British freight steamer which arrived at this port yes terday. The hattle with the undersea boat took place shortly before daybreak on the second day out. In the darknees the two boats maneuvered maneu-vered about, the British steamer's gunners gun-ners locating the hostile, craft only by the glare that went up as she fired volley after volley from her small guns. Officers Of-ficers of the steamer declared the U-boat fired at least sixty-three shells and then sent a torpedo through the water. It missed by a narrow margin. The British gunners returned the fire, the battle continuing until daybreak. Then the I'-boat fled toward the African coast and submerged. The freighter escaped es-caped without damage. |
