Show SIGHTING SUBMARINES. I The submarine that appeared the ! other day at various places off the j Pacific coast from San Francisco to San Diego, has dived under the Ameri I can continent and has recently been visible to lobster fishermen and others 1 off the coast of Maine. Tomorrow or Dext day it may be in the Gulf of Mexico, Mexi-co, or it may take wing and return to ' its home waters. There is no telling what either a submarine or a vivid im- agination will do in war time. This i is the second or third time a submarine has been reported in New England waters wa-ters since the United States and Got-i Got-i many have been at war, and firing has been heard off this, that or the other point along the coast of Massachusetts Massa-chusetts and Maine, but the stories were only good for one day's headlines in the sensational papers, for they all flattened out after investigation. It would be possible for a German U-boat to raid the New Pin gland coast, but if such a thing occurs we shall hear of the sinking of a ship before anyone sees the periscope of a subsea enemy. The Pacific coast, however, is absolutely abso-lutely immune from such attack", and it seems eilly as well as a waste of time to gather the rumors and send them out to the world over the press wires. |
