Better speech 'i;ck was observed at the Itrigham Young university in ;t meritorious program in Collie : hull. "Results That Can lie Achieved Through the Observance of Better Speech Week" received consideration from Prof. T. Earl E'nrdoe. white "Philosophy of Expression" Ex-pression" was discussed by Prof. Alfred Osnfond. Professor Pardoe emphasized tlie necessity of making the thoughts and inspiration of Better Speech week carry over to the rest of the year. He borrowed a story from (he fruit canning industry, urging the ''keeping of tlie best and the 'canning' of the surplus," and made application thereof to better speech. Language was discussed as instinctive instinc-tive and invented. Professor Pardoe closed with, the assertion that '"Slang shows the inadequacy of the user's vocabulary, and swearing swear-ing is a. manifestation of man's lower emotions. Professor Osmond, with true psychological wisdom, put his hearers into good humor by telling a story that was funny but pointed. "Who discovered America" had been asked one student by another. "I did," came the answer. In a sense the answer was correct, contended the professor "each one of us discovers dis-covers America, discovers what it means to us: and in like manner each of us discovers what speech wp hnvf. They were as follows : Melody, splendor, adoration, eloquence, virtue, inno- j cence, modesty, faith, joy, honor, radiance, nobility. sympathy, heaven, hope, love, harmony, liberty, lib-erty, happiness and purity. To this list Professor Osmond added the following: fol-lowing: God, mother, home, and! conversationalist. ! U. mixed chorus, ac-1 companied by the Symphonic Cham-1 ber Music organization added ! much to the life and spirit of the i occasion in the rendition of "Down With the Enemy," from the opera "Puritans," by Bellini. The Symphonic Sym-phonic Chamber Music organization also gave several delightful instrumental in-strumental selections. The music was under the direction of Prof. Franklin Madsen. I |
