Show v BENJAMIN LEWIS IS fAD DEAD AT AI LOGAN Pioneer Resident Since 1860 Parents Figured in Early Utah History LOGAN LOGA Aug 31 Benjamin 31 MarIon Marion Marion Mar- Mar Ion Lewis a prominent resident of 01 Logan since 1860 died at his home h here re Sunda Sunday He was as the son of Neriah and Rebecca Hendricks Lewis vis and was born in J- J Nauvoo Ill March larch 20 20 1841 his parents being closely associated wl with wih h the early history of the L. L D. D S S. S church and its founder Joseph Smith The family crossed the plains in 1851 Mr Lewis came to Logan in 1860 and was almost at once elected captain of a company company of minutemen minutemen minute minutemen men who did so much to protect the early settlers from Indian at attacks at- at tacks He lie filled the office of bishop of Logans Logan's First ward waid for forty years rears assisted in building the tabernacle tabernacle tab tab- tabernacle and anti temple an and served in a number of city offices both 1 elective and appointive He assisted assist assist- ed ed do building the Central Pacific and anti Utah Northern railways He lie was three times married His first wife was Barbara Y Crockett whom he married in 1862 Of his family by bv this wife eight children survive His Ills second wife Eliza Ann Jenks he married in 1855 Because of this marriage he served a term in prison for polygamy Two children children children chil chil- dren of this marriage survive but both wives are dead He married a third Barbara Mathis who survives survives survives sur sur- vives him There are no no children of this marriage Funeral services will be held in the tabernacle on on Wednesday at 2 p. p pm m |
