Show Volume VIII Issue VIII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 9 August 1, 2003 Clarence Henry Smith Note: This article submitted courtesy of Cleo Smith Zarek. My father Clarence Henry Smith as a young boy rode his horse to Sage Valley, Wyoming during summers to work on his Uncle Lars Hansen’s ranch. He liked to ride to Afton, Wyoming for the 4th of July where he tried his horse he was riding in a race, and took 1st prize. His love for ranching and farming stayed with him through the years. He was born and raised at 8063 E. 500 S., in Huntsville, which we called the South Lane, in a home built in 1887 by his father. John Henry Smith took for his bride, Mary Hansen, Clarence’s mother, where they raised their six children. It was also the original property settled by Clarence’s grandparents, pioneers John A. Smith and Mary Heathman Smith, also know as Grandma Smith, who served as midwife and nurse on numerous occasions all over the Valley. It was on the same property that John A. Smith had a big grizzly bear attack. It seized his thigh, tearing back a large piece of flesh. John’s wife, having experience treating the sick and injures, placed the flap of flesh back in place, sewed and bound it up, and his leg healed. Clarence and Selma Mortensen Smith finished raising their family of seven children, the last three born there in the same home. The home had undergone a few remodeling jobs. An apartment was added for grandparents. I, Cleo, thought growing up on the family farm with loving grandparents in a joining apartment couldn’t have been better. We were a close loving family that played and worked together. Riding horses to round up the cattle, and good team to pull the wagon, sleigh, or farm equipment was essential to have until the tractor took over. Fifty-five or more years ago my close friend Joanne Felt and I would ride horseback from our homes in any direction all over the hills, as far as Wyoming with no locked gates or fence restrictions. Yes, it is a lot different now, but our memories live on. The sixth generation of Smiths are still living on the original pioneer property on the South Lane.
