Maplkton, Dec. 10 Work is progressing pro-gressing rapidly on the Springville and Mapleton canal and reservoir system, under the direction of E. M. Buyer of the Spring vllle City council. The labor at present is being put on the canal leading to the old reservoir, which will be rciidy for water by the end of the week. The embankment of this reservoir will be raised and strengthened, and its capacity will lie greatly increased thereby. vSome trouble is being had with the new reservoir, which shows a disposition to leak prodigiously. For over three weeks Ut'teen or sixteen ir-rlgating ir-rlgating streams" have been flowing into it continuously. A few days since au accident to the canal stopped the flow for a couple of days, and the water in the reservoir had all disappeared disap-peared by the time the water was turned in again. It is probable that puddling will have to he resorted to before it can bo made to hold water. Faruiersherc expect sotin? benefit from the sub irrigation, however. Uccent'y Mr. and Mrs. Dunham VatiLeuven celebrated the 32nd anniversary of their marriage, which was ulo the ladv's 57 ill birthday. They had nob intended to have any EjH'cial observance of I he day, but the matter was in olhi-r hands. The daughters of the- house, "before the very face 'i ml eyes" of the old people prepared the celebration and carried out a well-planned surprise.' The Iarty was pronounced by competent judges to have been a most royal 4,'imd lime. Mr. and Mrs. VanLeuveu have had a very successful and prosperous pros-perous married life. In the pioneer times, 32 years ago, they were married In a log cabin on the Larsen lot in this city. Now they are comfortably com-fortably located in a commodious and comfortable farm house, and can contemplate the future with every prospect of easy declining years. Oscar Whiting, in the estimation of local agricultural experts, deserves a vote of ccusure. This year he raised a crop of squashes, which when gathered and piled, made a rick as big as The Independent ofilee. The prize squash of the bunch weighed 157 pounds. Maple-ton Maple-ton people think he should have taken that squash to the Springville fair and collected a few prizes. If he fails again, his case will be attended to, say the neighbors. Mr. Whiting is one of Mapleton's most succest ful farmers, and as a scientific squash culturist probably has no equal in the State. Public School Affairs. A most pleasing and instructive Parent's meeting was held last Friday Fri-day evening in the Central school building. The sixth grade pupils were called to the blackboard and there wrote a paragraph on an assigned subject. Principal L. E. Eggertsen spoke on the advantage of regular attendance and home work of pupils. At Wednesday's devotional exer cises, Messrs. T. R. Re'ly, Samuel Buckley and I. N. Whittaker have spoken to the school. A number of parents have been present at these exercises each Wednesday. Next week the schools close for the Christmas vacation ana a pleasant pleas-ant time is in store for all lovers of school work. On Thursday eveuing, December 19, an excellent program will be given to the school patrons. It will give to the parents an idea of the good work being doiie by the teachers. Friday afternoon, the 20th, the children will have a party in Reynolds hall and in the evening the larger pupils with invited friends will enjoy the dance interspersed with a musical and literary program. It is expected that many parents aud supporters of our school will be present and mingle with the young. Principal Eggertsen is directing the work or several students in special branches since they have completed com-pleted the eighth grade. Of Jtcneilt to You. D. S. Mitchell, Ful ford, Md..
