Show USDA HAS PROGRAM TO SUPPORT POTATO PRICES potato growers of iron county were informed recently that the U S department of agriculture has announced a program to support the price of potatoes the program is designed to encourage growers who cooperate in the AAA farm program to plant their full acreage allotments in 1942 the price support according to J M palmer of the county AAA committee will be provided in each of the major producing areas at scheduled base prices for potatoes i gra grading ding US no 1 or better sacked fob in carlots appropriate price adjustments will be made for marketable potatoes grading 85 per cent U S no 1 and for potatoes in bulk and in storage if it proves necessary to handle bulk or stored potatoes it will be based on the rate of per hundred tor for burbank russets prices will be supported through one or more of the following methods 1 purchase for relief distribution by ay the agricultural marketing administration distribution to low income families through the stamp plan 2 diversion for the manufacture of starch livestock feed and other products under the agricultural marketing administration 3 loans or purchases by the commodity credit corporation mr palmer pointed out that the potato price support program is not aimed toward expanded production in 1942 but rather to assure the full planting of the allotted acreage which is the same as in 1940 and 1941 this acreage is sufficient to prod produce uce the million bushels needed to me meet et normal domestic requirements quire ments to further encourage the full planting AAA regulations will provide the potato producers must plant an acreage equal to at least 80 and not more than percent of their allotments in order er to qualify for a full potato payment and be eligible to participate in these price supporting programs |
