Show Wednesday, January 22, 1992 Special Edition 5 Cross country skiing to be part of Winter Fest held on January 30 One WSU professor started cross country skiing when he was 15 By JAMES C. GODFREY Staff writer of The Signpost Smelling the clean air instead of car exhaust, hearing birds singing and feeling snow sliding under your skis is what cross-country skiing is about. "The way in which we can appreciate our recreations the most is when as many of our censes as possible are used. Cross country skiing is one of the most rewarding sports, because of the enhancement of the five censes. Cross country skiing allows me to see the natural beauty," Dr. Jock Clidden, professor of philosophy at Weber State, said. Glidden, started cross country skiing at a boarding school in Vermont when he was 15. He continues to cross -country race as well as ski for recreation. "Skiing allows me to get out in the country side under winter conditions and see and experience what most people don't see." Clidden said. When I race, "I love this type of competition because it's not physical contact, but very exercise intensive. You exercise your whole body your arms, legs, and heart" Cross country skiing is different than more traditional sports. "It's different from golf, where you can drink beer, ride around in a cart, and still call it a sport." Glidden said. Cross-country skiing is a sport that exercises the entire body "l can't think of another sport that has that total integrated exercise." Glidden said. "Running and biking exercises your heart and your legs, but not your upper body. Rowing is great for your arms, and perhaps your heart ,but not much for your legs." Glidden said. V v; 1 - V Cross-country skiing is the cheapest of the skiing sports. A beginner could get an average ski package for around 180 dollars according to Glidden. No special clothing is needed, just warm clothes a beginner already owns. Trails are free and the skier can ski over the same trails that are hiked. Areas that have prepared tracks cost five to six dollars a day. Beginners can walk around on the skis until they learn the kick and the glide technique. Some precautions should be taken. Plan for dehydration so take water along. Dress warm to avoid getting cold and wear layers of clothes that can be removed to avoid overheating. Return to your tracks in the afternoon to - - ' v-. ' t: avoid getting lost. Avoid the back country unless familiar with the avalanche danger present in remote areas. A three-mile cross-country ski race will be a part of Winter Fest. Registration begins Wednesday, Jan. 29. and entry forms can be picked up at the Health and Physical Education Complex. Competition will take place Thursday, Jan. 30, at Nordic Valley. The fee for competition is two dollars. Scoring will be based on elapsed time and an intramural championship shirt will be awarded to the lowest time in each division. Skis can be rented from the WSU Wilderness and Recreation Department, located in the Super Circuit arena. CROSS COUNTRY SKI RACE Registration deadline: Wednesday, January 29, 1992 before 3 p.m....
