Show Wednesday, January 22, 1992 Activities for those long winter months WSU's intramural program offers year round activities Special Edition Staff writer of The There is a program at Weber State that some students benefit from tremendously and others know nothing about. It can lift, bounce, kick, paddle, or shoot the boredom right out of the long, cold winter months and put you right in the middle of hot, exciting action. The place is HPEC, the program is intramurals. The intramural program is flourishing at Weber under the direction of Gil Standridge, acting coordinator for the past five years. During the cold months when its almost impossible to get outdoors, intramurals gives students, staff and alumni a chance to benefit not only from exercise, but also from getting out of the house and interact with fellow athletes. It all adds up to fun, mixed with a little competition and a little or a lot of skill. Play begins with winter basketball leagues on January 13. The league consists of five-on-five play for men, women, andco-recreational leagues. Games run Monday through Thursday at night with most teams playing twice a week. Several different divisions make up the league. A round-robin tournament advances the winner to a recreational league tournament. That winner then advances to the State Extramural Champion- HOF (Continued from page 1) ogy of the sport from 1920 to 1993. School displays decorated the hall with pictures and essays of Hof andOgden. Weber School District schools made gingerbread houses, ceramic steins and painted, wooden nutcrackers to learn about the culture of Germany. Crafts from both countries were displayed and available for visitors to buy. Indian crafts and drawings of Utah stood next to hand-painted nutcrackers and smokers. The festivities continued all weekend with displays and competitions in winter activities. There is also a Hot Shot match and free throw contest beginning January 30, at 7 p.m. in the HPEC main arena. In the Hot Shot competition, the competitor is given one minute to score as many points as possible, shooting from different "hot spots" on the court. Each competitor has two rounds. The best score is recorded and the highest scorer is declared winner. The Free Throw is just as challenging. Each participant has 50 free- throws. Another basketball event is the three-point shoot out. This event is on February 5, in the HPEC main arena. Each contestant will have a specified amount of time to shoot five shots from five designated spots on the three-point line. Highest scorer is declared the winner.
