Show Abbey's Moab portrayal readied for production The rendering of Edward Abbey's play "Best of the West" during the Statehood Day program the evening of Jan. 4 will be a test for members of the audience to see who can laugh loudest at himself. Abbey subtitled his work, which was written especially for this program,"A Mortality in One Short Act." The cast includes a Sahara Clubber and Lady Sahara Clubber, clad appropriately; a Bulldozer named Trailbuster; Mr. and Mrs. J. Parnell Turkey and their Winnebago; a Cowboy, an Indian and a Ranger; and God disguised as a burning bush. The author notes in his description of the scene that "That bush, though not exactly exact-ly burning, does emit a puff of smoke from time to time. Generally the actors disregard disre-gard it." After reading the play, one member of the Statehood Day committee commented, "It wasn't meant to offend anyone, any-one, it was meant to offend everyone." At one point the Sahara Clubber, while extolling the virtues of nature, describes Moab as 'The one false tooth in the smile of the eternal." . All of the "Caricatures" in the cast are similarly treated, so those in attendance should come prepared. (No rotten 1 tomatoes, please. The members mem-bers of the Moab Community Theater had a hard enough time convincing themselves they should produce this hilarity hilar-ity of half truths.) j |
