Show Statehood Day activities finalized The agenda of activities for Statehood Day, to be celebrated in Moab this year, has been finalized by the local committee in charge, and includes a wide range of activities for Wednesday, Jan. 4, which is the anniversary of Utah's becoming a state, and extending into Jan. 5. A bus carrying dignitaries from northern Utah will arrive in Moab about 1 p.m. Jan. 4. At 2 p.m. the bus will carry them on a tour of Arches National Park, returning about 4 p.m. Those who do not wish to take the Arches tour will have the opportunity, during this time, to take, a historical walking tour of downtown Moab. Local guides, members of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, will be available for those who wish. The walking tour, made simple with, a self-guiding brochure including descriptions and information informa-tion on historical buildings, is open to visitors and residents alike, and can be done at any convenient time. For Statehood Day, the free brochures will be available at the Times-Independent, Family Budget Clothing and the Visitor Center. The brochures, which also include some historic buildings in the valley which will require an automobile to visit, will be available at . the Visitor Center after this celebration. A special highlight of the walking tour on Statehood Day will be the presentation of slide shows in the City Council Chambers of the Courthouse between 2 and 4 p.m. t These are two short shows which have been done by 3rd and 5th grade students at Southeast Elementary, Ele-mentary, entitled, "Utah: Land of the Unique," and "Major Powell's I Journey Down the Green and I Colorado Rivers." A banquet will be held at 6 p.m. at the SunDowner for local leaders and visiting state officials. Special guests will be members of several state boards and commissions commis-sions which will hold their regular meetings here on Jan. 5. Representation is expected from the Utah State Land Board, Utah Outdoor Recreation Board, Utah State Travel Council, Department Depart-ment of Trinspori.ation Commission, Commis-sion, Division of State History, State Parks and Kecreation, ue-purtment ue-purtment of Natural Resources, State Historical Society, and Industrial Development Board. At the banquet, several local citizens who have made significant contributions will be recognized and a slide show on Arches National Park prepared for the Natural History Association will be shown. Emcee at the banquet will be Sam Taylor. At 8 p.m. the official Statehood Day program will be presented. Chamber President Ron Auger will introduce Dr. Milton C. Abrams, Chairman of the Board of the Utah Division of State History, who will preside. Remarks on behalf of Governor Scott Matheson will be given by Michael D. Gallivan, Director of Development Services, State of Utah. The Statehood Day Address will be by Dr. John D. Hunt, director of the Institute of Tourism and Outdoor Recreation, Utah State University. The title of the address is "Recreation and Tourism in Southeastern Utah: Playground or Battlefield?" Lydia Taylor Skewes, Moab's oldest living native, will be honored during the program. She will be introduced by Gen Pope, President of the Women's Literary Club, which is Moab's oldest organization. Following this the Proclamation Proclama-tion of Statehood will be given, with Lt. Governor David Monson expected expec-ted to be on hand to make the proclamation. Interspersed with these remarks re-marks and presentations, there will be musical and theatrical presentations, presenta-tions, the most notable of which will be a short play entitled "Best of the West" by Moab author Edward Abbey. It is a spoof on contemporary contempor-ary life in Southeastern Utah in which the author lambasts all the stereotypes in the cast. This will presented by members of the Moab Community Theatre. During the morning of Jan. 5, visitors will have the option of a 2-hour bus tour of U-128 to the historic Dewey Bridge, with Cec Thomson providing narrative, or the historical walking tour of downtown Moab. These activities will complete the Statehood Day celebration, with the bus returning to Salt Lake City during the afternoon. |
