Show distinguished VISITORS we learn that in tho first week of september president E B and party including members of his family of the cabinet and other distinguished public men will pass through our city on their trip to tho coast although our paper as well as the vast majority of our people does not belong to tho party of the present administration and we luve ever denounced abo unconstitutional tut ional manner in which it waa placed into we believe to be conscious of the respect due to tha exalted official position of a chief executive of the united states de facto or then again we be cievo mr iiames to have acted to the best of his ability while occupying alie situation for which the sovereign people had destined samuel J til den the worst of mr iiames presidency was alie manner in which he took or rather received it the administration has been eminently purer and cleaner than were the preceding two terms true mistakes have been made but the error was mostly on the part of judgment not of conscience the latter day saints indeed will have reasons to the administration of 1877 to as a period fraught with menace and ominous indications tor them the firt amendment of the constitution has been perverted to satisfy and assist sec zealous zealots in their pcr se cution of a particular tenet of our belief the first conviction and sentence of ft polygamist has taken place in the period and mr iiames refused to pardon the prisoner lis toning more to the hue and cry ol 01 fanatical persecutors than to the pleadings ot a persecuted people the secretary ef state even went go far out of his line of duty as to degrade himself and liis exalted office by most despicable denunciation ol 01 a law abiding peaceable people which is constituted of the best elements that land on tho atlantic shore all these administrative and judicial proceedings and procedures are recorded somewhere and account will bo required soiro time still as all these attempts legislative and others were crowned with as little success as they deserved the latter day saints can afford to abide calm and quiet they aro and have always been a legal people in peace and in war and t beir love for the constitution and institutions of the country is aa great as in any section thereof they fully realize what belongs to the men icho have the safekeeping of the national interests in their hands the latter day bain Is never wanted favors from this government ern ment they never asked but for justice they do not now intend to capture its benevolence and good graces they expect naught but justice from this as from any other authority tho rity but they respect and honor the office which washington adams and Jef lerson graced and are ever ready to manifest this feeling of homage thus we are almost certain that our city authorities and citizens in general will take appropriate steps to oner the distinguished visitors the hospitality of our city or whatever time they may deem fit to stay with us the office of president of the united states is not a republican noi a democratic office it is a trust of the people and all ought to honor the man who occupies it and bis friends we hope this suggestion will fall on fertile ground and result in arrangements which shall confirm agdens claim for loyalty and hospi bality |
