He is John Zito, a 65 year young, retired railroad man, and he logs more than eight miles of running every day. He jogs on a set schedule that begins each morning at 6:30 a.m. John took up running after he retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1978. 1 traveled for four months, after my retiremen. Before starting his jogging program, he weighed 165 pounds, and he affirms that running makes him feel 30 better. ffi His wife, Laura prefers to walk with the neighborhood ladies, rather than join him in jogging. Walking isnt for me, says John. I might as well stay, home, if I am only going for a walk. John was born in Riverdale on June 11, 1915 and moved with his family to Roy in 1929. He is the fourth of ten children. He and Laura were married in 1957. He live in a comfortable house at 5150 South, 2239 West in Roy. They have no children. John keeps himself in top physical condition in running. Very often he runs his full eight miles without stopping, but usually he takes a break, half-wa- y through his course. His idea of a break is running four miles, walking 100 yards and then running another four miles. John has other hobbies to keep active. He tends his lawn and garden spot, and often visits some Japanese friends in West Roy, who operate a truck farm. John likes to help them weed the onions, and is on hand to help at harvest time. law-abidin- g. Rebuilding Year For Wildcats (Qaaeirs Beeiin Doi With the success of the OGDEN Wildcat football team, many fans may have forgotten that basketball is just around the corner. The official starting day for daily basketball workouts was on Wednesday, October 15 in preparation for the 1980-8- season. : For the first time in three seasons, the roster shows many new and unfamiliar faces. Gone are four starters and a top reserve from last years record-breakin- g team that went 26-won the schools third straight Big Sky Conference title and made its third straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs. ; Head Coach Neil McCarthy, entering his sixth season, looks at this year as a remodeling year, rather than a rebuilding one. . Im looking at this season with some guarded optimism, said McCarthy. We have a good tradition at Weber State and weve built a sound, fundamental program. This season is a remodeling, rather than a rebuilding year for us. We didnt lose all our players. We did lose the hub of the e ballclub, Mattinson was a starter and Harper was voted the top reserve in the league last season, so we may be tom down a little, but if we can The forwards should be stable with point guard position as well and is a Gerald Mattinson ) returning along great jumper. The big guard spot, played so well by Flageolle, was considered the Bruce Collins, will most likely be sleeper of the year in Colorado by inherited by a promising sophomore, who lettered last one scouting service, after averaging 17 Royal Edwards season as a freshman. Edwards is points and 13 rebounds a game for them to slightly bigger than Collins, and has Denver North High, leading excellent range outside, but is an aggressive rebounder inside as well. Seven new faces dot the Wildcat lineup this season, five of them junior college transfers, which is unusual for a I (6-6- long-bombe- . Wildcat team. We had specific needs we had to fill said coming into this season, McCarthy. We pursued junior college players and high school players to fill those needs and we ended up getting the junior college players as opposed to the high school players, though we did sign two promising freshmen candidates. So it was just a matter of who did and did not sign on the dotted line. Out of the five junior college players who signed, two of them, Jeff Smith, a remodel and implement the new players, we should be fairly solid, but a bit inexperienced. The two areas McCarthy sees as a problem are at center, where he lacks a legitimate big man, and the point guard position. The point guard and center spots will be critical for us this season, McCarthy said. We have Tim Doolan returning for his senior year, but he was out most of last season with a knee injury. The only other two point guards we have are both new this season. Lewis Griffin out of Sheridan Junior College and freshman Rich Escandon. Both are excellent players, but it will take them time to learn the system and get used to the other players. The only returning centers of last years team are Steve Condie (6-- and Brian Devincenzi ). Condie is a two-yeletterman who has been backup to Richard Smith for two seasons, so he knows the system. Condie has good jumping ability and is a better than average shooter from 15 feet. . Devincenzi spent most of his freshman season on the junior varsity and can play either the post (excellent leaping ability) or forward. 7) the mens division. Another Cougar coach who is high in his praise of Jones talent is track coach Garence Robison. This isnt surprising, since Lloyd captured the 1978 WAC Indoor crown in the d hurdles. I started hurdling as a high school freshman, and still hold the CIF high hurdle record (8.7 seconds). Like most players, Jones finds it difficult to struggle through practices. In practice we find outselves going against the same people every day. Consequently, its a lot harder to beat your own men, says Lloyd. However, if we can beat our own players, we can beat almost anybody." We expect great things of Lloyd in his senior year, says BYUs offensive coordinator Doug Scovil. He can make bigger strides this season, and has improved a lot since he came to us as a defender. With the Cougars averaging eight or nine different receivers a game, there are just too many to key on. In the? opener with New Mexico and the following weeks game with San Diego State, the player was Gay Brown. In the Wisconsin game the stars were Scott Phillips and Dan Plater, and Eric Lane was the receiving standout in the Long Beach game with 10 catches. . With a passing game that diversified, one would think no particular player looms as a special threat. But in senior Lloyd Jones the Cougars have a player opponents just cant afford to forget. 72-ya- rd JULIE BEATY Netters PROVO For those who must put together some kind of defense against BYUs passing game, the situation is a familiar one: Just when you think you have everybody covered, some player in a blue and white jersey is either diving for a reception or is hehind his all-WA- C traveled to Brig, Switzerland, where she joined the USA Trampoline and Tumbling Team to compete as one of three US womens team members to compete in power tumbling.
