Show NATIONAL oratorical CONTEST the objects ot of the national oratorical ator at leal contest sponsored by the leading newspapers of the country are 1 to increase interest in and respect for the basic principles ot of government ment in each of the participating nations in the united states cheref therefore ore the contest will as in previous years center around the constitution ution of the united states and 2 to promote a better understanding between nations by means of a frank and f friendly exchange of national viewpoints this now international contest originated in 1923 out of a similar contest carried on in the state of california its results were so substantial that the leading newspapers decided to make it national in scope out of that decision came the first national contest in 1924 which was participated participate id in ath enthusiasm thusia sm by high schools throughout the nation the final meeting of that year was presided over by president of 0 the american bar association and addressed by president coolidge then the seven contest speeches were judged by five members of the supreme court this goes to show the importance of this contest by 1926 the contest had become international at the first one there were five nations represented in the 1929 contest there were thirteen nations present this shows how it is growing in importance the 1930 contest is expected to be bigger and better than ever there have been several changes made which well add interest and also work for the conta contestants stants any secondary school pupil pupi under lunder nineteen years ot of age is eligible and each contestant Is required to give a six minute talk on one of the twenty selected phases of the constitution also a tour four minute extemporaneous talk on a governmental ern mental topic chosen by the judge will be required the winners from the seven districts each receive a tour to europe arises may also be ba given by the newspapers to the winners fo for reach each sub subdivision division |
