Show The Daily Utah Chronicle - Monday, January 13. 1992 Page Ten Utah men tankers beat Puget Sound; lose to Washington Brad Mortimer Chronicle Sports Writer The racing was fast and victory, dumping the Puget men in their Sound with a score of 126-7The men took seven of eleven events as they dominated basically from top to bottom throughout the meet. The main hit man for the Utah squad was Jim Aumann. Aumann not only won each of the two individual events in which he swam, but also helped with the first four-ma- n relay, teaming up with Andars Dunkars, Magnus Frolander and John Wester for a first place the action furious Friday as the University of Utah men's and women's swimming teams took to the waters at the University of Puget Sound in the first event for the Utes in the new year. The visiting Utah team had to deal with tough competition from both the men and women of Puget Sound. In fact, two years ago, the Puget Sound women's team was NAIA champions and last year they were runners-up- . victory. The men were also in for a struggle What's more, the Aumann as the Puget Sound men also have a sensation bagged himself a meet strong tradition in the pool. All things record in the 100 meter freestyle considered, the stage was set for an event by swimming the length in a action-packe- d meet of two cool 52.03 seconds. Aumann also dominated the 200 competitive squads. The men raced away with another freestyle in a time of 1:56.58. Other winners for the men were: Thomas Axelson in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 24.37, James Sullivan in the 200 meter fly in a time of 2:11.46, and Jason Aldred in the 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2:20.59. The women, however, were not so lucky against their Puget foes. The women gave a fine effort in a losing cause as the former national champions uprooted the Lady Utes with a 120-8- 3 victory. The loss leaves the women's team still without a NCAA meet win yet in the season to date. The Lady Utes have been marked by a continual string of setbacks this year, the latest of which Jim Augman was that the freshman sensation Wang Xiaohang from China has returned to her native country without finishing out the season. Even though it was not an overall victory, there were several bright spots worthy of mention. To begin with, Eva Hjelm came through with a strong performance in the 400 freestyle event by winning handily with a time of 4:31.72. Sydney Spangler barely squeezed past her Puget Sound's, Shannon Faeling by .47 seconds to win the 200 meter breaststroke in 2:49.46. After Shannon Abramowitz barely lost to Kristin Watson of Puget Sound by .63 seconds in the 100 meter singles. On the next day, they faced the Huskies of Washington University.. The Utes had to be tired after their competition against Puget Sound, for both the men and women handed the Huskie men and women victories in large quantities. It was hard to race in two meets in two days but the Utah men and women were at least good competition. The women eventually succumbed to the Lady Huskies by a 6-- 1, 6-- 0. co-capta- 1 of Heidi Chinchiolo and Jennifer Jensen defeated Libby Romney and Jennifer Smart in another overpowering 1 event winning to end the evening just as Salvatierra 6-- 0, 6-- started it with her 6-- 0, 6-- 1 ousting of Larsen. With the win, Coach John Tsumas is said. Wang was projected to be the conference champion in at least two events and to win her events at the NCAA meet. Still, the Lady Utes have struggled, losing all their dual meets this year. Wang is a member of the Chinese Women's National Team and came to the university autumn quarter. She is the only woman in the world to have broken the barrier twice in the 100 meter butterfly and is the favorite to win the gold in that event at the 1992 59-seco- nd Summer Olympics, score of 123-7men, obviously fatigued from the day before, also gave the final 2.
