Show SPEECH IN FULL the address that was not made in ahe court house last saturday s here given in full as it would have been delivered but for the gag rule applied there was no intention to publish this speech but the action of the convention makes it absolutely necessary BILL SPEECH mr chairman ladles and gentlemen of the convention I 1 will pardon you it you for a moment presume that I 1 address you after your convention has adjourned your convention refused to allow me a hearing and in publishing these remarks I 1 shall use the words sir chairman ladles and gentlemen of the convention the same as it I 1 stood before you but I 1 do not tor a moment flatter you by presuming to ad diess the republican convention held in ogden stay ath it Is a greater a more just convention that I 1 address a convention whose chairman gives all a fair hearing I 1 have no fear of being denied the right to speak to this great convention of thousands of people because the ogden standard presides over this vast deliberation and can distinguish between justice and tyranny no man ever asked tor a rearing in its columns and was denied it makes no distinction between friend or foe and while it makes no pretensions to judicial knowledge sufficient to aspire to a supreme judgeship ai has never shown its absolute unfitness to fill a high judicial function by pro at any parliamentary meeting that a question of personal privilege must be denied or that a motion to reconsider was impossible in a republican convention because win mckenley was elected president of the united states in 1896 such rulings and flippant remarks might pass in a bar room but do not express any great judicial ability mr chairman I 1 was asked just now while standing before you why I 1 made such a great effort to speak to less than people when I 1 could speak through the standard unrestrained to thousands that Is a fair question ever since I 1 have conducted the standard I 1 have made it a business to oppose and attack rottenness rascality and trickery wherever found in public life and I 1 have found some of it among republicans I 1 have been repeatedly told by republican leaders donit wash our republican linen in the paper make your fight in the conventions and use the paper to wash the democratic linen I 1 have been trying to obey this injunction here he re today but what do I 1 find A republican convention of that party which only two short months ago gave me their unanimous support for congress today refuses to hearing to the man who 13 charged with having bought every one of you and sold you body and soul to salt lake people you have just unanimously approved dy your applause the ch airmans statement that no one believed that I 1 would be guilty of even undertaking such a scheme then why can you not hear me on this question you say dont speak of it in the standard and yet you deny me even a voice a hearing in an american republican convention you express a willingness to exonerate and vindicate me from these foul charges it I 1 will but keep still why should I 1 keep still are you ashamed to hear the names of the men who concocted and manufactured this contemptible untruth tor no other purpose than to ln jure an innocent man I 1 ask you are you so much in love with a taw of your belt styled leaders that you would rather keep in their company with the debauchery of chelc foul deeds covered only by the mantle of darkness in preference to hearons the truth told so that in justice to your own good name you might repudiate your false leaders and walk forth tree and honest men it you answer yes that you approve of the shyster methods of your alleged leaders that you are as deep in the mud as they are in the mire and hence have not the courage to repudiate them then in heavens name let me speak the truth to those who know not of the dark ways of your unholy alliance mr chairman I 1 hold in my hands a copy of the state journal a silver republican paper and or the weekly press a republican paper said to be the official republican paper of the mckinley administration I 1 know it was such a paper during the campaign of 1896 these papers both say practically ane same thing I 1 now read from the press as follows it appears that bill pledged himself and in writing it Is said to support lendsay rogers as delegate to the national convention and work to the end that he be made national committeeman tor utah and further that in the deal there Is a clause which provides that arthur brown shall be elected senator in the event the legislature is made republican this it is eald Is what bill promised in return tor the support of the gang in his aspirations how do the republicans of weber county like this deal have they had enough ot this gangs domination of political affairs or will they turn things over into their hands again this fall it Is time that the better element of the party asserted itself the spirit of lendsay rogers and alcohol and brown has dominated political affairs long enough the party should rise in insist that only honest methods be employed and honest genbe put to the front it there are any weber county politicians who persist in following this outfit the people should know at that the fate that they deserve may bo meted out to them mr chairman I 1 am advised that your convention stands ready to vindicate me and vote that you know the above statement to be false but I 1 do not seek tor a vindication I 1 seek for the denunciation of the men who through their base scheming and deception gave birth to this story ana for what to injure me have I 1 th right to drive these sneaks out of theli lair and slay them you say no 1 answer yes and the chairman of the greater convention I 1 now address gives his consent I 1 eee before me jn this court house at least a halt dozen men who have stated these dirty charges in whispers of venom will they now arise in their places and present the proof I 1 set in this assembly major and U F thomas the editors of the state journal and press the papers that pub lashed the charges will the gentlemen who think they control this convention give these two gentlemen permission to say from what source they received their information and who inspired them to print those misrepresentations no you will not I 1 therefore assert on information and belief that geo M hanson and john D murphy and several of their henchmen are directly responsible for the slander I 1 challenge chal lengi these gentlemen to ask both editors from whence they gained their information and make public the answers what was th e object of these charges ladies ani gentlemen if your unanimous endorsement of myself tor congress two montas ago caused these persons to become envious of my alve greatness it they thought I 1 was growing too fast they had a right to clip my wings to supplant me in the estimation of my fellow countrymen but they should do it honorably they must do it fairly they must do it justly in the darkness under cover hyena lluc john dmurphy did like a coward tell this base falsehood tor no other purpose than to injure my standing before honest men and I 1 denounce him as a contemptible sneak and he should be cast aside as are all malodorous things with a judas iscariot Is carlot kiss did geo M hanson do his dirty work in slandering me pretending to be my friend like brutus he would strike the fatal blow but had not the courage mr chairman these men have no right to thu make these statements known by them to have been false and now refuse to face the witnesses dt their low trickery mr chairman this Is a republican convention that I 1 now address and this is the place to make charges against our leaders tor I 1 know of no other body that has a better right to discipline its county chairman than that body which created him I 1 charge that the republican county chairman Gi orgel hanson has ha s and continues to mismanage the affairs of the party soon after his election to office he employed a man to conduct the inside affairs of the party campaign who was opposing part of the republican candidates then running tor office when bis attention was called to this matter and ahe party was with his perfidy the employed replied that it was irue but that he would not oppose the candidates while he was in the committee room but reserved his right to oppose part of the ticket or all of it when not on duty as chief clerk to the county chairman yet this man was continued in office at 3 per day to fight the republican ticket I 1 charge that mr hanson expended the funds of the last county campaign without the knowledge oc consent of the executive or county central committee and while members of the executive committee coave repeatedly asked or an accounting io the funds and have now waited 18 months no statement can be secured openly asserted andi tobe a fact that the county chairman has mis appropriated the fund sot the central comm atee republican and as a member 0 ithe executive and ws aa candidate I 1 money remand of ts fund and request aha you BonY the to furnish and at once an accounting or the receipts and expenditures of the committee s money I 1 further bharga on and belief that i our i present chairman consented or arranged with parties bo trade off dart of the republican ticket in the las campaign the county does such work shows himself absolutely dishonest and unworthy of either gratitude or reward I 1 charge the county ph airman with usurp edithe centre authority of the executive and central committees ot weber county nhe appoints and endorses i applicants tor office without the knowledge or of either ahe executive pr i r T charge tha the county chairman has turned office of guardian of the the ot a dishonest ward tibee ti eee i it asi the county to it that fair play is govenat gi and that a reasonable time is provided tor republican voter suo cast their ballots but our chairman as the boss of the ward heelers arranges tor the railroading ot the election of prepared tickets through the primaries at the rate of from 4 to 11 minutes for each primary I 1 charge that the county chairman in two primaries called under his author ity arranged tor and the election ot delegates on such short notice that the primaries were over before the people had a chance to attend the primaries at the two last primaries in the fifth ward was the county chairman wah the city chairman john D murphy acting as chief ward heeler the primaries were called tor 8 sharp at the first primary the delegates were actually elected by less than a dozen men and at 16 minutes to 8 the election was over and men prominent in business affairs called to cast their votes 4 minutes past 8 and learned it was all fixed these business men declare they will not belong to a party that permits such outrageous methods at the last primaries the same methods were pursued and 30 delegates were elected by less than that number of voters in just exactly 13 minutes under the direction of the county chairman as chief of the push as he loves to call himself in the second ward the primaries were over in a few minutes yet notwithstanding the tact that the delegates were elected at a few minutes past 8 a man who ar rived 10 minutes after the primaries had closed had his name added to tha list this may appear to some people as smart politics but it Is sure to create dissatisfaction and disruption of the party already complaints are made on all eldes that this smart business must cease the executive committee favors granting that all primaries shall be open at least two hours as has been the usual rule in the past but our great county chairman would rather usurp the functions of the committee than to face certain explanations desired mr chairman I 1 could continue for an hour and cite instance after instance wherein our county chairman has prostitutes prostituted his high office tor his own selfish motives but I 1 think I 1 have said enough to show that our chairman mr hanson is wholly incompetent and dishonest and that unless a change is made in favor of honest politics all hope tor republican success is gone in weber county I 1 ask you to look at the people now comprising your conventions where are the prominent republican business men why aro they absent do you think that they care 40 train under the leadership of geo M hanson and his man friday suppose the people of this convention investigate the standing of geo M hanson and john D murphy personally politically and financially it you do I 1 think you will learn that you make a mistake in saddling these barnacled barnacles barn acles upon the party I 1 ask you now to look at the jury bos 12 seats where the second ward delegation sits with 22 votes but only 10 are filled ot the complete delegation of 22 from the second ward where are the other 12 and why are they not in the convention yet you will see those ten men cast twenty two votes because through smart politics they were rushed through in a few minutes so you look all over this convention and you find less than delegates yet halt of the delegates through these smart political tricks will cast on an ss of from 2 to 3 votes each you may by these cunning practices honor the chief of the push but you are doing il at an awful cost to the party the party may survive it but you cannot win any triumphs or victories by such methods mr chairman I 1 want to show that I 1 have good reasons tor believing that mr hanson Is unscrupulous at present I 1 retrain from making charges of a more serious nature than I 1 now make but which may be given to you later on mr chairman our county chairman hanson went to salt lake city called on mr pratt the census supervisor and stated that the republican central committee desired to pass on and recommend the appointments tor census enumerators tor weber county mr pratt thought that was fair and granted the request then again we find the chairman usurping the central committees powers and recommending the names 0 parties which he assures mr pratt the central committee selected among those recommended by the weber coun ty central committee consisting of hanson and his lieutenant john D murphy I 1 find the name of willard hanson a resident of beaver county I 1 am informed that our county chairman assured mr pratt that his brother was a legal resident of weber county why should a man be selected from beaver county to take the census of birch creek Ri verdale roy and uintah Is it possible that there is not one qualified man in all those precincts or in weber county who Is this man that he can play hide and seek with the great republican party of weber county mr chairman I 1 am told and over a dozen times that it I 1 dare attack aeo oeo M hanson I 1 will not go to congress this tall I 1 answer that by saying that I 1 would rather play honest politics and be defeated in an honorable ambition than to step in to the filthy pool of dirty politics anu be elected to congress I 1 would rather be turned down and know I 1 am right with my banner flying without a stain upon it than to have the highest office as a gift for the sacrifice of my honor the people failed to turn out at the last primaries which enabled mr hanson and his man friday lo 10 pack the invention but do you know why the peb ale remained away it was their the way the previous primaries and republican politics generally have been and are being yun the fact that less than voters turned out in the five precincts in ogden city should set you an to thinking it is an easy matter to capture a county convention when ithe voters feel sore and disgusted but mark what I 1 tell you these sore and disgusted republicans wil vote on election day and you may just as well take your warning in time play honest politics and victory is ours mr chairman some days ago our county chairman was overheard to say to judge miner on the streets of ogden 1 I have it all fixed I 1 have a cinch on the whole convention this was in reply to the Judges inquiry who will ibe |
