Show Proposed Olympus Council Sets Meeting For February A general meeting of the residents resi-dents of the Olympus area to be held at 8 p.m. February 19 at the Olympus High auditorium at 4045 South 23 East for the purpose of discussing area problems was announced by Mr. Eugene B. Duf-fin, Duf-fin, 2792 Yuma Circle temporary chairman of the Olympus Community Com-munity Council. The purpose of the unincorporated council is to nvestigate, study and promote propositions pro-positions for community improvement, improve-ment, and to act as the official voice for representing the area. The members serve without pay. The council wasnot organized to oppose incorporation of the area into metropolitan Salt Lake City, Mr. Duffin emphasized. There are such problems as to whether the Olympus area should become a part of Salt Lake City and accept the higher taxes which (Continued on Page 7) Olympus Council (Continued from Tage 1) would be theirs as a result or to continue as they are and be tagged as "free loader." Such a statement is much oversimplified, continued Mr. Duffin. There are complex problems which should first be investigated in-vestigated such as the status of the County Hospital which accepts patients from all over the state without adequate remuneration from other counties. Also the hospital hos-pital is used as a training school by the University's school of medicine. med-icine. These with other facts might lead to the conclusion that the hospital should be state operated. oper-ated. There is also an overlapping of duties with the State Board of Health and the Salt Lake City Board of health especially in the inspection of milk and meat. This should be further studied. One group of citizens propose that Salt Lake City be disincorporated disincorp-orated and that the Salt Lake County government be empowered to function for the entire area. A plan similar to this being worked in Denver, Colorado now. In addition to these problems concerning government there is also discussion about a swimming pool for the area. In some other places l3rre outdoor pools have been built. These, however, are out of 'use for several months of the year making the upkeep costly. The building of a large pool in the Granite High opened throughout the year and jointly operated as to expense by the school and the citizens through a recreation foundation foun-dation is being considered. Also a Culture center for aesthetic arts is contemplated. The Community Council committee com-mittee has several sub-committees established. On the committee to draw up a constitution are Henry Nygaard, chairman; C. Nelson Day, vice-chairman; Alex Adamson, Mrs. M. W. Rideout, Mrs. Dan F. C. Carman, and John Baird. Composing Com-posing the Community Activities committee are Mrs. F. C. Carmen, chairman; Dr. Melvin V, Strong, Dr. Guy Lewis, Dr. Richard Duffin. Duf-fin. The Metropolitan Salt Lake City Area Study Committee is headed by Clyde Reaveley, chairman chair-man with Howard W. Price, Eugene Eu-gene D. Amott, H. Millard Day, Mrs. James W. Ure, Mrs. Robert J. Minton, Mrs. Stanford Stoddard, and S. Fushio. The Schools com-mittee com-mittee is partially organized with Mrs. Lee Neff Taylor as chairman. Publicity is handled by Mrs. Roland Bain, chairman. In the East Millcreek and Holla-day Holla-day area are 10 sections, towns or sub-divisions. Residents of the Cottonwood Heights area are anxious to have their own community council con-' con-' tinue and are moving cautiously with regard to becoming a part of the new Olympus Community Council. On the other hand both councils have the same objectives and Cottonwood Heights representatives represent-atives want to go along with the new organization as far as possible said Chairman Earl Cox. I At the next Cottonwood Heights I Community Council meeting Mr. J Eugene Duffin andor Mr. C. Nel- j son Day will be invited guests to explain further the Olympus area - movement. |
