Show DEATH OF ELDER WILLARD SNOW president of the scandinavian mission sion we have to record the melancholy occurrence of the death of elder willard snow who departed this life on the of august while on board the steamer transit at sea al about out eighty miles from hull on his way to liverpool elders eider s P 0 hanson and ff P jensen were accompanying him from whom we have obtained the following parti particulars particular cula ars elder snow had attended tile copenhagen gon conference erf on the and and a special general conference on oil the and was in in usual health in tile the evening of the loth while addressing a council of elders he was so violently attacked with illness as to oe be unable to proceed the illness was apparently caused by an all overexertion over exertion of both mind and body there being no bodily disease to which it could be attributed upon receiving the administration of the elders lie he experienced great relief and determined upon coming to liverpool instructing g elders hanson and jensen to prepare to accompany him he passed a very comfor table night the following morning however lio wever it was manifest that lie he was very seriously affected during the lay day he hebe became worse lprse at intervals and audit it was deemed necessary j to r report t b his is case to a physician his removal to the etor hospital os pit al was advised which was cimpl complied I 1 ed with on the lath 11 he was so much lm improved prove d as to undertake his journey to liverpool walkin walking t some di stance distance to the steamer without any alpar rel relieved OI 01 saturday the 20 ah lie i received fa food w with h apparent reliah on sunday morning he appeared somewhat w worse orse again aw and I 1 continued quite insensible du during ring the day out but none seemed to anticipate the near approach of the time of his dissolution A general weakness pervaded his bis system and about five p M x he slept with entire i ease and composure to all appearance about two hours after falling ing as asleep I 1 ee his breathing appeared difficult but bui co continued only fly for a few moments when his sleep again became peaceful as the slumber of an infant A little before eight in the evening he breathed his last without a struggle or the least emotion that was discernible to elder hansons dansons Han sons watchful eye in compliance with h the captains wishes elder S snows body was consigned to a watery grave the sa same ul night dalh occurred with the usual ceremonies attending such an occasion at sea we are informed that all the respect and attention which could be expected under similar cai circumstances was paid by all on board to the corpse and the burial ceremony we understand that elder snow was a little over forty years old he was brother to E elder lder erastus snow of the quorum of the twelve and also to elder Zerub babel snow one of the judges of the supreme court of the united states for the territory of T altah i tah emigrating rating fund a magistrate under the provisional state government of D deseret a lieutenant colonel in the nauvoo legion and on the ath of august 1851 lie he was elected a representative to the legislative assembly of utah territory at a general conference held in great salt lake city commencing september eth 1851 elder snow was appointed on a mission to england receiving a similar appointment at the same time we ca came m e over the he plains and the ocean in the same compa company 1 as elder snow did arriving at liverpool on oil the of december following immediately after he was a appointed pointed to labor with elder robert campbell in TO tIp the le pastoral charge of the church in i scotland where elder snow continued nearly three m months about this time elder erastus snow who was then president of the scandinavian Mis mission siony having arrived in england on his way to great salt lake valley elder willard snow was appointed on the of march 1852 to succeed him in the presidency of that mission on tile the of april elder willard snow took the steamer at hull and arrived arrived a at t copenhagen on the 26 th since which time he labored ab or ed dit diligently faithfully and successfully in the discharge of his important duties as will b be see seen from his letters published from time to time in the millennial star owin owing to the unconsciousness of elder snow during his bast last moments he be left no instructions or communications to his family or friends this is calculated to render still more heavy the stroke which the sad intelligence of his unexpected departure from his labors in this sphere will bring upon his family and a acquaintances uain t ances I 1 in n the tar far distant valleys of the salt lake all a in this afflicting dispensation of divine providence we sincerely sympathise with the decease ds bereaved family relations and friends in zion and share the grief which will nil fill their bosoms when the sorrowful news reaches their ears and in this expression of feeling we are assured that we are not alone the thousands of saints in the british islands in scandinavia and other parts of europe will feel to mourn with those who mourn but we trust that sorrowing kindred and friends will be sustained by him who is a husband to the widow and a father to the fatherless and that the soothing influences of his holy spirit will operate as the balm of consolation to the afflicted the church in general arid and the scandinavian mission in particular will by elder snows decease experience peri ence a severe loss his unwearied diligence ard and faithfulness in ministering in the gospel of our lord jesus christ and his anxious desires tor for the ing of zion and the adeane advancement ement of the redeem ei eis Is kingdom will x ill endear his name to thousands who may regret his early departure from this vale of tears shed not tor for him the bitter tear nor give your heart to sore regret but the casket that lies there the gem that filled it sparkles yet we mourn not as those without hope it if our brother is taken from our midst he acts now by the power of the same eternal Kiest priesthood hood which he
