out by marjor major general atchison and myself us qs per 1 I 1 our report to you of oe said date took up their line ot of march from camp near richmond for far west we encamped the night of the at Linvil Lin villes Ws greek creek a a short distance from the road about six sixteen een miles from far west at which point we received an express from brig 1 gen doniphan informing us that he was then enca encamped 6 aped on log creek with a f force orce of bf five hundred men and that he ha would join us as atthe at the crossing ot of said creek on the road from rom richmond i to far west ayio by 10 the next morning lowthe on the I 1 october the troops got together at the last named point joint when wo we mustered about eighteen hundred men whilst at this place we hecei received ved your orders of the ulac u it and I 1 received an order of the and a letter from you yon of the same date at this point major general atchison left me for 1 liberty when I 1 was left in i sole command I 1 their debts and indemnify for damage r done by them ad that the balance should leave the state and be protected out by the militia but to be permitted to remain under protection until further orders morning moy ning then told him that I 1 would require jos smith jr sidney rigdon lyman wight parley P pratt and george IV robinson as as hostages for his faithful compliance with the terms and would pledge myself and each one of the officers present that in case he after reflecting ting and consulting upon the proposition n during the night deell declined binef acceding to them that the hostages should be returned to him in I 1 the morning at the same point they were received but i it t was understood in case they did comply they were to be held for trial as part of the leaders called f for or by the first stipulation I 1 then gave him until one hour by sun sant in the evening to produce and deliver them aethen wethen we then returned to camp and I 1 directed the troops to make preparations to march to far west by an hour dour and a naif half by sun run with a determination in in W 1 case the hostages were pot produced to make an attack upon the town forthwith orth with I 1 directed gen brigade to be mount ed and to form on the right of the division to act as flankers if necessary and if required to pass entirely around the town and f form orm on the north side with instructions to make the attack at the report of the cannon which was to be the signal for the general attack general grahams brigade was mounted and formed on the extreme left to act as flankers and if required to form the lineon the west side with similar instructions as to the commencement of the attack gen doniphant brigade was ordered to pa rade on foot and to form on the left of benl parks with instructions to form the line of battle on the south side with same instructions as to commencement of attack th the e artillery cl company with one piece oi of ordria ordnance nce was placed at the head of gen and gen wilsons Wil sons brigade w with ith instructions I 1 to occupy an eminence eminence within three hundred yards of t the he town the army being disposed of i in n this manner at the appointed time I 1 took up the line of march in direction of far west when the troops got within about six hundred yards I 1 discovered the flag and the hostages advancing I 1 immediately halted the army and rode out and met them received the hostages and placed a guard over them for their safety I 1 grid and I 1 protection and ordered the forces b back ici I 1 to pur our encampment I 1 cannot forbear at I 1 this point expressing my gratification and approbation of t the good c conduct duct and gallant bravery evinced by all the officers and men under u command marched up with as much determination and deliberation as old veterans not knowing but bat that the charge would be sounded every moment for surrounding the town there was no noise or confusion nothing but an an eager relieved the guard over tho the prisoners itt at far west by four companies of jen gen parks brigade Bri grade and placed them under the command of oil col thompson ad brig ad div with instructions ns of putting us to death himself and lucas and his troops troop were svere desirous of exhibiting us as in the streets of in independence sunday ath we were visited by some ladies dies and gentlemen one of 0 the women came up aad very candidly enquired of the troops 1 which of the prisoners was the lo 10 lord rd whom the mormons cormons worshipped wor shipped one af the guard pointed to me jae with a significant smi smile le and said his is he the woman waman then turning to me I 1 enquire enquired d whether I 1 professed to be the lord and savior I 1 replied that I 1 pro professed ceased to be I 1 nothing vint a man and a minister of salvation sent by jesus christ to p preach reach the gospel this answer so surprised the woman that she began to enquire into our doctrine and I 1 preached a discourse both to her and her companions pan anions ions an and d to the wondering soldiers who I 1 i listened listened with almost breathless attention while I 1 set f arth the doctrine of faith in jesus christ 1 and repentance and baptism for remission of sins with the promise of of the holy ghost as recorded in the elie second cha chapter P ter of the acts of the apostles Apostle sj the woman spoken publicly by me ine a few months previous that a sermon should be preached in jackson county by one of our elders before the close of 1838 the tha troops having crossed the river about 10 we proceeded proceeds edd on and arrived at independence pen pem dence past noon in the midst of great rain and a multitude of spectators who had assembled to see us and hear the bugles sound a blast of triumphant joy which echoed through the camp as we were ushered into a vacant house prepared for our reception with a floor for our beds and blocks of wood for our pillows I 1 general dark clark arrived at far west with one shotts thousand and six hundred men and five hundred more were within eight miles of the city aty thus far west has been visited by six thousand men in one week when the
