Show Thursday, July 19, 2007 BREAD Continued from Page 5 It was an evening months and months later when a man rode up on a horse and yelled, “Whoa!” Mama spun around. She screamed and ran toward the man. I was scared, until I saw the man jump off his horse and grab Mama up in a hug so tight I thought they’d stick together forever. I’d never seen two people so happy to see each other in all my life. “Papa!” Ed cried, jumping up like he hadn’t spent all day in the fields. I had thought of him as a nearly grown man of twelve until Papa let loose of Mama and nearly swallowed Ed up with a hug. Ed didn’t even try to get away, like he did when Mama hugged him. Then Papa saw me. As soon as I looked in his eyes, I was his own little girl again. I ran into his arms. Partha put her arms up to be included in the greeting, but Kenneth ran away from him until Mama brought him back. “That’s all right, little man,” Papa said. “We’ve plenty of time to get to know one another.” Ed picked up Papa’s satchel and carried it inside. Partha fiddled with the clasp and got it open. The next thing I knew, she had a white cloth over her head, swaying like a dancer. “What is that?” I asked. “Papa’s,” Partha said, pointing to the open satchel. “Let me see it,” I said, tugging on it. “No!” Partha squealed. “Mine!” “Girls!” Mama said. “Don’t quarrel.” The Gunnison Valley Gazette “What…?” Papa stopped as he saw what Partha had. “It’s mine!” I said, pointing to a pink embroidered flower in the corner. Mama’s face went pale. “Where did you get that cloth?” she asked, her voice so soft I could hardly hear her. “It’s a long story,” Papa said. Mama took the white cloth in her hand and fingered my uneven pink flower. “This is the cloth we lost three years ago,” Mama said. “Where did it come from?” “Are you sure it’s yours?” Papa asked. “Of course. There’s the flower Marge embroidered. Where did you get it?” “In Mississippi,” Papa said. “Mississippi?” Mama’s eyes opened wide in surprise. “How? I nev- er… how could that be?” “Come in and sit down,” Papa said. Even Partha followed him over to his chair. He sat down and pulled her onto his lap. “What I have to tell you may be hard to believe,” Papa said, “But it’s true. As you remember, we only got $300 from selling that land. It’s not enough to pay for three years worth of living. We stayed nights with whoever would take us in. We had to ask people for food. We’d knock on the door, introduce ourselves and ask for food. That’s the only way we could eat. “This one time, early in the mission, we’d been walking a long way without food. At last I was so hungry and exhausted that I didn’t feel I could go on. I had to have something to eat or die. So I knelt down and prayed to the Page 7 Lord, pouring out my heart, asking Him to please help me get food. When at last I opened my eyes, I saw a white cloth laying a little way from me. I walked over and picked it up. Under that white cloth was a loaf of warm bread.” Mama’s eyes were full of tears. “A little taste from home,” she said. Papa shook his head. “I don’t know how it happened,” he looked around our circle of faces, “but that bread saved my life, and that of my companion. Don’t ever doubt, children, that God is mindful of you.” Warmth seeped down through me, from my head to my toes. I basked in the feeling of security, knowing with sudden, unshakable certainty that I was a precious child and that I was loved, every bit as much as Partha. Renee Adams shared this story with me after transcribing it from a tape made in the 1970’s by her great aunt, Marge Gubler Dalton. Marge was two years old when her family moved to LaVerkin. Renee’s great grandparents are Joseph and Mary Gubler. Joseph and his brother, Henry Gubler, were living in St. George when they were asked to move their families to settle LaVerkin. Joseph received his mission call on May 4, 1904 and left on November 9, 1904 to Mississippi, part of the southern states mission. Marge remembers the day a loaf of warm bread and white cloth disappeared from the kitchen. When her father returned, he had the missing cloth and told the story of praying fervently for food and finding a warm loaf of bread wrapped in that very cloth sitting on the ground where it most certainly had not been when he began his prayer.
