Show THE SPHINGYILLE INDEPENDENT A- J. Issued every Friday. D. P. FELT, Editor ami Manager. Entered at the pot office at Springville, Cluh. for transmission through the mulls as ieeoud-clas mm tor. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION. One year, Six month9, Three months. $2.00 1.00 .75 WHEBB TO HOLD THE FAIR. About the only thing our businesn men here are agitating now is a Utah county fair, to be hold next fall in this city, but 1 believe that if such a fair becomes a reality, the site should be fixed at Springvllle. Dave Felt of the Springvllle Independent revived the agitation concerning a county fair, and since he first touched upon it in his paper he has been actively rustling in n endeavor to bring the idea to a successful suc-cessful issue. Dave Is a rustler, and will spare no efforts In support of the move, no matter what Utah county town captures the prize, but it would be disgusting for ttie slow-going city of Provo to gain it after Its sprightly sister, Springville, has done all the work. Provo Correspondence, S. L Argus. The above expresses in brief terms tha opinions of the people of Utah county as to where the county fair should be held Now If our city fathers and business busi-ness men will get a move on themselves them-selves and Invite the people of the various cities of the county to co-op-crate with them in holding a county fair in this, we shall surely secure the prize. The great success of the local fair, as The Independent has stated before, it proof that this city Is the place to hold a successful county fair. Springville Is centrally located, easily easi-ly reached, and by far the most en-tsrprising en-tsrprising city in Utah county; her citizens are energetic and thoroughly capable of doing their share to make an affair of this kind a success. The Importance of having the fair held here cannot he over estimated, It would be the means of advert ising ourcity and county and would show what we are capable of, and our city ilads must not hesitate In this matter, mat-ter, neither must our business men. THE MONRO! DOCTRINE. The average reader of the country paper is not in a position to be very well acquainted with what is known as the Monroe Doctrine. It has not been necessary to refer to It lately and is only called up now on account of the threatened invasion of Venezuelan Vene-zuelan territory by England and Cleveland's Cleve-land's manly stand to protect Venezuela Vene-zuela on the principle as enunciated by Monroe and accepted by the people of the western world. On December 2, 1823, Pnsldnt Monroe Mon-roe sent his famous message to Congress, Con-gress, In which he noted the propo sal of Russia to arrange by amicable negotiations, the respective rights of the United States and Russia on the northwest coast of this continent, A similar proposition was made to Great Britain by Russia, which was accepted. While the discussion was under way the United States was asked to assent as a principal. They did so, and judged It as the right and to the Interests of the United States as involved that the American continents con-tinents by the free and Independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to tie considered as subjects for future colonization by any European power. Id the wars of the European powers in the matters relating to themselves we have never taken any part, nor docs it comport with our policy to do o. It is only when our rights aro invaded in-vaded or seriously menaced that we resent injuries or make preparation for defence. With, the movements iu this hemisphere, we are, of necessity, more immediately conuected, and by causes which must be obvious to all enlightened and impartial observers. The political system or the allied powers is essentially different in this respect from that of America. This difference proceeds from that which exists In their respective governments. Aud to the defense of our own, which has been achelved In the loss of so much blood and treasure, and matured matur-ed by the wisdom of their most enlightened en-lightened citizens, and under which we have enjoyed unexceptional felicity, felici-ty, this whole nation is devoted. We osve it, therefore, to candor and to the amiable relations existing be tween the United States and those powers, to declare that we should consider con-sider any attempt on their part to extend ex-tend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety. With the existing colonies or dependencies of any European Euro-pean power, we have not inlsrefered and shall not interfere. But with the governments who have declared their independence and maintained it, and whose independence we have, on great consideration and on just principles, prin-ciples, acknowledged, we could not view aiiy interposition for the purpose of oppressing them, or controlling iu any other manner their destiny, by any European power, in any other light than as a manifestation of unfriendly un-friendly disposition towards the United States. CLEVELAND S LATEST BREAK. PitEsiDEMT Clkvkland has issued another special message to Congress in which, as usual, he has injected his undying hostility to silver. He seems to think that now while he stands amid his blaze of glory from his famous Venezuelan message that his advice will be accepted by the people with the same alacrity that his advice to maintain the Monroe doctrine was; but no, instead of proving prov-ing a halm to the fevered finances of the nation it was blistering. It was more like throwing powder into the tire. The Hurry in financial circles only existed seriously In Wall street, Loudon and some little government ciicles. It was caused by his message on Venezuelan matters. It is a pitv it did not cause more of a Hurry. The ptople at largo could see with great equanimity London, Wall strecs and some other gold alchemiz.ng localities go down. Those who have any knowledge of the people's finances know that these flurries will nnke the legislators look to silver as the great savior. This same flurry caused Senator Allen to introduce the resolution calling for the free coinage of silver, resulting In a majority of 14 in the Senate. These self-same flurries will do the country at large more good than all the Lon- dons, Wall street! and Rothschilds put together if they are forced to disgorge some of their ill-gotton wealth. Even If It costs a panic in the country let 'er come; we don't care if the whole financial fabric of the country is sin t'shed, if it will only adjust silver to its proper place and the more serious the panic the greater dependence and welcome will be silver's advent iuto full fellowship with gold its twin brother.
