Show ALMA ELDREDGE ELD MuDGE D PIONEER OF 1847 DIES IN SALT LAKE alma eldredge 83 prominent in the early day political life of 0 utah and an active member of 0 the tha L D S church died last week of pneumonia at his home 1046 south ninth east street salt lake city mr air eldredge had been ill III only a short time members of 0 the immediate family were called to the bedside and were present when the end came alma eldredge was born near indianapolis diana di polls ind october 13 1841 the son of 0 ira and nancy black eldredge he was converted to the mormon faith and late in the year 1847 crossed the plains to utah with his parents in a train commanded by captain daniel spencer after arriving in salt lake the family first settled in the southeast part of the town but later removed to american fork in 1861 alma went to coalville Co alville where he engaged in the ranching and stock raising business and was one of the tour four to construct t the first ditch to tap the weber ber river in ia summit county for irrigation purposes in 1863 he was married to marinda al merrill of ogden who i survives him later he followed freighting from salt alt lake city east along the mail line ine and in 1863 1868 was occupied in grading of the union pacific railroad company east of evanston wyo from 1869 to 1871 he was engaged in missionary work tor for the mormon church in fix england and ireland and upon his return again spent some time in railroad construction construction work in 1879 he entered the mercantile business and became manager of the C chaville Co 0 aville cooperative co operative mercantile institution ution in 1895 he purchased the people s mercantile company and was also tor for a number of years identified with the johnson coal mine at Co alville besides being an active business man he took a prominent part in local politics having served in the offices of sheriff of summit county prosecuting for that county ty and tor for three terms as probate judge he was a member of the last territorial legislative council from his district and took an active part in n all legislative matters he was also a member of three state constitutional conventi conventions oms the last one of which framed the present constitution of the state of 0 utah mr eldredge was prominent in calling the first republican convention in utah in 1891 and also in drawing up his party s platform on that date in 1898 he was his bartys candidate for congress but was defeated by the democratic nominee in L D S church matters he took an active part and at the time of his death was a high priest on his return from his mission in england he was appointed to be second counselor to president W W cluff of the summit stake later becoming first counselor he remained in tho the presidency until 1901 when the stake was disorganized in 1910 he came to salt lake and had made his home hero here ever since surviving him besides his widow are the following children albert eldredge coalville Co alville earl eldredge roosevelt roscoe eldredge Eldred gd salt lake mrs airs W J bromley salt lakeland lake and mrs mis elroy wilkins roosevelt |
