Seasons revolve and we once more greet thu fejtival of -'Tlv: Child." Who can cxaneerate its hold u p n the hearts of those who celebrate its hold upon the hearts ot thuse who celebrate cele-brate it? There is not a mother whose birth-pangs are vivid in her memory but that is moved with compassion com-passion for out-cast Mary, remote from tender ministration in the hour of her anguish; there is not a child whose little lingers reach out in awe to touch the latest tiny babe in the household, but that finds the manger-cradle manger-cradle at Hethlehem a thing to mart's! mar-t's! at; there is not a man who surrenders sur-renders himself to thought but that sees a world-transformation resulting from this squalid birth and the legends le-gends that have gathered around it; there is not a childless woman whose heart is hungry for the pressure of a little face against her bosom, but that can hear i:i the message of the virgin angels, her own errand to the world to proclaim peace and goodwill, good-will, and to ever see deeper even than the contented mother into the holiness holi-ness and possibilities of aN children. Over all virtues let us setsirupllcity. Great messages, great truths, great happenings are ever simple in their elements. Simplicity is the graudtur of the great and the greatness of the obscure. It is the charm of prattling childhood; it is the diadem of the learned. Now if we divest Jesus of the complex com-plex theories of warring commentators, commenta-tors, strip him of bewildering creeds, which in any event never came into existence until hundreds of years after hisdealb, wetJndhis message lo the world one of intens.' simplicity. Drawing in our minds from the cares of the conflict of life for a few moments, mo-ments, possibly we may (hid inspiration inspira-tion to elfort by looking back at this man who led the world out into broad truth whose simple character is after ages of thought forcing ils.-lf to lii front just because it is so simple. a Onward from the narrow thought of the Jews who selfishly regarded the G )d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as their own peculiar possession and whose character was often outlined as little more than that of a bloodthirsty blood-thirsty leader of a lighting nation-onward nation-onward from the myriad deities of reverential Asiatic and European minds who sought by the very multitude multi-tude of Gods to include all I ruth onward on-ward with greater clearness than all seekers who had preceded him, he led the world's thought to' assert the existence ex-istence of one God of one universe. He did uot argue. Him to exist; he assumed as-sumed Hiuiaethe simplest explanation explana-tion of the powers, visible and invisible, invisi-ble, of a mighty creation. Furthermore, as omniscience, omnipotence, om-nipotence, omnipresence arc beyond the powers of our finite minds to grasp. Jesus makes God greater than the wildest theories of eager souls, aud yet simpler than the simrlest interpretation in-terpretation of Him, by announcing Him as "Father" and as "Love." The troubled soul can understand that, aud rest. The ''Father"' chastens chas-tens His little ones that they may develop, de-velop, He breaks dowu His truths into in-to small fragmeuts to suit their growing grow-ing powers, He Interprets thorny wavs Into upward paths. His love makes all ihings work -together for good to those who love Him. Every woman heart can understand Him as "Love," for In her love has been the "ascent of man" and In His love has been the ascent of the soul. More simple by inlluite extent than the complicated sacrifices and penances penan-ces of other and earlier interpreters, was his auswer to those whe inquired the way to eternal life. The simple acts of every day kindness done to tho least of God's children, were the passports pass-ports thither. He made "the child" the thing for humanity to reverence. While other systems cast chiidreu to the beasts, He made of them moral monarch whose service called forth meekness and gentleness, and whose worship united men and women on equal terms, e after nineteen centuries we are only drifting bck to his simple standards stan-dards of the first. We see that to have beeu a ruler of a nation is less than to have lived to hate evil: that to live without purp-jse, though never so luxurously, is less in the Divine estimate esti-mate than the hesitating caress of the least of us who would sooth another's sorrow: that it Is better to die for a truth than to live by a lie: that our Father watches our feeble efforts with tender eye and judges actions ac-tions by aspirations and not by results: that "Love" is over all, guiding where reason fails. Not like Buddha, did he preach inaction, in-action, nor like Confucius did he preach veneration for traditions. Activity in the direction of others' needs, and open-minded fidelity towards to-wards truth though it separated him forever from the sympathy of his own people these were his characteristics. What is Bethlehem to us? A place only! What is Jesus? A real person! Then at this Christmas time let us who think, emulate what He did as a man rather than venerate the place of His birth. Thus shall we be Christs to those who dwell in the darkness of doubt and who' sorrow in the pangs of bereavement. The B. Y. A. football team will line til) against the Crescents at Provo Saturday. Round trip fare, Dec. 23rd, only $12,"., via. the O. S. L. Complaint is made to us of the shabby treatment given the free reading read-ing room by the, opera house. Nearly every one is lending hearty aid to this splendid public proposition, but when the Johnson Bros, proffered to give an entertainment free, fur the benelit of the reading room, the opera house people met the pmp-isition with a blank refusal, stating that the opera house would be opened only on the payment of $20. The other day, up in Logan, the Johnson Bros, made a similar proposition. The Thatcher opera house was at once turned over to them, and the result was thatsome was cleared fur the Logau free leading room. Briuham Bugler. How to Prevent Piieumonta.
