Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A10 Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition Wednesday, February 23, 2005 Templar teams head for state Last-second free Templar boys gain revenge over last year’s championship loss to Parowan By Craig Cook Staff writer EPHRAIM—The Manti Templars beat the Parowan Rams 34-22 last Saturday, but it wasn’t for lack of trying not to. A game film in which the winning team has 18 turnovers and shoots 31 percent is a film that neither team is likely to keep as a highlight reel. The game didn’t lack intensity or effort, but it did lack execution. It was a game where the first ten possessions included three passes tipped out of bounds, three blocked shots, two rotten passes and two uncontested, but badly missed shots. That kind of start led to a first quarter score of 4-3, for Manti. The Templars pitiful 29 percent first quarter shooting was only eclipsed by Parowans’ 6 percent, or 1 for 18. Some of Parowans poor shooting might be attributed to Manti’s defense. The Templars played a number of pressure defenses including a full court press, a half court trap and one-man back. But mostly, Parowan just couldn’t make their shots. The Rams’ Jason Hughes had 10 points and seven rebounds and not much help from the rest of the team. The Templars, on the other hand, did have more than one bright spot. Devin Frischknecht had a respectable game with nine points and nine rebounds and Travis Thompson had eight points, six rebounds, six blocked shots and a steal. Taylor Salanoa added seven points and four rebounds and Josh Hugentobler contributed six points and forced 10 Ram turnovers. Despite a first quarter that Templar fans would rather forget, Manti won the game in the second period when they (with some help from Parowan) held the Rams scoreless. Manti dominated By Doug Johnson Staff writer ST. GEORGE—The North Sanpete Hawks ended their 200405 basketball season with an outstanding effort in the first round of the 3A playoffs facing the Snow Canyon Warriors in St. George. Snow Canyon’s Mitch Frei converted both ends of a one-andone with six seconds remaining to seal the 53-49 win and send the Warriors to Thursday’s second round at the E Center in West Valley. The Hawks played tough against the second-ranked Warriors, with numerous lead changes all night. But North Sanpete could not stop Snow Canyon’s 6-foot-10 center Coby Leavitt. The highly recruited senior poured in 30 points—the most by a Hawk opponent all season. Senior forward Kyle Poulson led the North Sanpete attack with BRUCE VAN DER RIET / MESSENGER PHOTO Manti Templar Taylor Salanoa tries to get through a Parowan defender during the first round of the 2A state playoffs last Saturday. The Templars produced a 34-22 win over the Rams, but not without some difficulty. Manti shot just 29 percent from the field in the first quarter and was outscored 15-11 in the third quarter. the second quarter 11-0. Parowan never recovered from the second quarter shellacking, but came out strong in the third and out scored Manti 15-11. Manti has the potential to do well in the state tournament, but they’ll have to do better than they did last week. Better than 60 percent from the free throw line, better than 18 percent from the three point line and better than 19 turnovers. They have shown themselves to be capable of better with a 15-7 record, but next week they’ll have to execute as well as show intensity and effort. The Templars will face Rowland Hall tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the in the second round of the tournament at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. Rowland Hall entered the tournament in the third spot in Region 14, which is home to some tough 2A competition, namely Juan Diego and Juab. Rowland Hall ad- vanced to the second round via 43-34 victory over Monticello last week. In the second round, potentially the most important game will be the first of the day when Richfield and Juan Diego face off at 9:30 a.m. Richfield and Juan Diego are serious contenders for the title, and one of them will earn a spot in the consolation bracket, clearing the way just a little bit for the Templars. Manti girls surge in third quarter to overcome Wasps By Karmal Mandel Staff writer EPHRAIM— The Manti girls basketball team won in the first round of the state tournament last Thursday in Ephraim, against the Juab Wasps, 48-32. The game started out slow for the Templars as they had numerous turnovers and could not get passes inside. Juab, on the other hand, came out strong and managed to hit most of their outside shots. Frustration was evident on the Templars’ faces in the second quarter when shots would not fall, free throws were missed and the Wasps’ score was climbing. Juab was up by two points going into intermission, with a score of 19-21. However, the Templars came out fighting in the third quarter, and turned things around. Kassi Tucker’s speed dribble, possibly the best in 2-A girl’s basketball, moved the ball up-court, and crisp passes inside to post player Sili Hafoka garnered the Templars a 15-point third quarter. The Manti girls also played strong defense and held the Wasps to a meager three points in the period. The girls kept the pace in the fourth quarter and generated a substantial 48-32 victory over the Wasps. Hafoka had a game-high nine rebounds, which she complemented with 11 points. Lori Jonson pulled down four rebounds, had two assists and one point. Despite hurting her foot in the first quarter, McKenzie Whipple had two rebounds, two steals and an excellent game from the free throw line, making 11 of her game-high 13 points from the foul line. Tucker had four rebounds, one assist and 11 points. Candalyn Kjar had three rebounds, two assists and four points. Kelsie Johnson had six points and three rebounds and Holli Harman finished with two points for the game. The Templars will now go to the second round of the 2-A state championship, and will face Enterprise tomorrow at 5:50 p.m. at the Sevier Valley Center, in Richfield. Tallman will play wide receiver at Southern Utah University accompanied by tight end Brett Johanson. Manti High graduate Curren Christensen, who played running back at Snow, announced he would walk on at the University of Utah. Snow’s coaching staff members said they got nearly everybody on their wish list, including top recruit David Johnson from Alta High School. Johnson, a tight end, 21 points, including a pair of threepointers. Tyler Anderson added seven points, and John Anderson and Austin Jorgensen scored six apiece. North Sanpete closes its season with a record of 11-10 while Snow Canyon moves on in the upper bracket at 19-2. The Warriors will face 15-7 Judge Memorial on Thursday afternoon with the winner taking on the winner between 12-8 Dixie and 13-8 Tooele. Lehi was the only Region 8 team to move to the second round through a 55-46 win over Hurricane. The 16-6 Pioneers will face top-ranked and undefeated Morgan (22-0) Thursday morning. Defending champion Wasatch (18-3) takes on Pine View (15-6) in the other upper bracket game. Dixie was the only road team to win in the first round, knocking off Region 8 champion Emery, 5451. Delta, the other Region 8 contestant, lost at Pine View, 48-60. Cowboys ride off with Bulldog season at state tournament By Craig Cook Staff writer EPHRAIM—The Kanab Cowboys ended the Gunnison Bulldog’s season last Saturday with a 53 -34, win over Gunnison at the 2A state qualifying tournament. All teams that won Saturday moved on to the State Tournament this week. The rest went home. The Cowboys came to play and jumped out early in the first quarter 17-12, and increased their lead in each quarter thereafter. They were lead by Brandon Brown with 22 points on 54 percent shooting and six rebounds, and Tanner Chamberlain with 11 points on 71percent shooting and six rebounds. Garrett Glover added seven points and grabbed seven boards. These three combined, contributed 76 percent of the teams points with a strong 54 percent shooting. The Bulldogs must have been suffering from tournament jitters, because although they threw up 53 tries to the Cowboys 50, they were simply unable to convert, and shot only 25 percent from the field. The Bulldogs executed their offense and got good looks at the basket, but simply couldn’t get the ball through the hoop. As the game progressed, the Bulldogs stayed patient and continued to work the ball, but their scoring woes continued. The Bulldogs, as usual, fought through to the end, but couldn’t overcome poor shooting. The Cowboys out-rebounded the Bulldogs 34-23, but the Bulldogs made up for meager rebounding with good ball control and few turnovers. Gunnison also had more opportunities at the charity stripe, but only made 45 percent of their free throws. Despite a good Kanab defense, the Bulldogs had good looks at the basket that they couldn’t turn into points. It wasn’t from lack of effort though as they picked up hustle points with no less than 10 steals and 13 of their 23 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Wayne Young had 10 points and three steals to lead the Bulldogs, and big man J. D. Pay dropped in nine points and eight boards. ,I \RX¶UH ZRQGHULQJ KRZ WR LQFUHDVH WKH VDOHV DQG WUDIILF IORZ RI \RXU H[LVWLQJ EXVLQHVV ZH PD\ KDYH WKH DQVZHU +8*( 23325781,7< VPDOO VSDFH ,I \RX KDYH MXVW VT IW BRUCE VAN DER RIET / MESSENGER PHOTO Templar Kassi Tucker uses her speed to out-manuever a Lady Wasp during the first round of the state tournament. Snow football says farewell, hello to players EPHRAIM—The Snow College football program recently said goodbye to seven players heading for four-year institutions, and quickly announced replacements to fill the Badger ranks. Headlining the list of departing Badgers is C. J. Ah You, an AllWestern States Football League first-team selection at defensive end. Ah You will fill a spot on the roster of Division I Oklahoma. Safety Ty Sparrow will move on to Weber State, and Kevin throws oust Hawks from state tourney was scouted by Southern Utah University, Dixie and Weber State. Two top athletes from Manti, Devin Frischknecht and Taylor Salanoa will also grace the Badgers ranks next season. Frischknecht will fill a wide receiver spot at Snow, the position he excelled at while at Manti. Snow coaches were impressed with Frischknecht’s physical play at the position, and expect him to join Juan Diego phenom Marqius Wilson in the Division I ranks in a sea- son or two. Salanoa, a quarterback at Manti, will get the opportunity to play the position at Snow. However the coaching staff is encouraged by his athleticism and versatility, and says if Salanoa isn’t high enough on the depth chart he could get a chance to start at receiver or defensive back. Johnson, Frischknecht and Salanoa were all named first-team All-State in both the Tribune and Deseret News. !
