Truitt Staff writer CENTERFIELD—Although no citizens came to the Centerfield City public meeting to discuss banning compression braking (Jake braking) by semitrucks, the City Council adopted an amendment to a city ordinance making it unlawful for trucks to use compression brakes where posted. The amendment to Title 6 of Centerfield’s traffic code ordinance was the main item of unfinished business at the Feb.17 Centerfield city council meeting. Another public hearing will be held on March 17 for the water project. Mayor Darwin Jensen said his trip to Washington, D.C. went well, and the city does have a “shot” at getting a congressional appropriation. He said even if they do, it won’t be all at once, and the engineers will plan to do the project in stages. In an earlier meeting, the council approved another year for Hansen Yard Care to take care of the cemetery grounds, but Mayor Jensen asked owner Brent Hansen to come with an accounting of his time and ex- pense. The contract is for $10,000 and after Hansen had accounted for his time and expense, Jensen said it amazed him how much time and expense it takes to do the job. He said it was over the $10,000 figure. Hansen said it does take a lot of time mowing around headstones, much more than most other lawn care. Jensen said the council now has a good idea of what it takes in both machine and manpower. Hansen recommended the council consider having the ground power raked. Hansen said it would greatly improve the lawn looks. Both Jensen and Councilman Richard Ahlers agreed that it hasn’t been done for at least three years. The council voted to spend an extra $1,300 to have the grounds power raked. Centerfield resident Jerry Johnson asked the council requested the view of the council on his starting an open-air market (or swap meet) on leased property adjacent to the Tip Top Club on U.S. 89. Johnson said the property had plenty of room for expansion, and to start out, the swap meet would only be open during the weekdays and only during daylight hours. Johnson said he plans to have all entrances and exits on side roads so traffic would not be entering or exiting from U.S. 89. He said he plans to have packaged lunches that don’t require a food handler’s permit to start, although, if the business goes well, he may include prepared lunches. He assured the council that he has $1 million liability insurance and restroom facilities. He added that he supports local merchants and would give free space to any nonprofit organizations. Mayor Jensen said his timing was good, since the Heritage Highway 89 Committee is planning to launch a plan to have a 330-mile long historic swap meet along the highway. Johnson received permission to continue with his plans. The council assured local resident Trinidad Chavez that he was not violating any city ordinances. The council had received a complaint about possible illegal animals and needed to know what the situation was. Through an interpreter, Chavez explained that he had several calf pens and sold all but three. He raises calves until they are weaned and then sells them. He also has 11 goats he raises. Chavez has 2.5 acres of land, and by the council’s calculations, he is working within the local ordinances.
